Wish Upon a Star A Christmas Story by StormyNite Written in December 1998 in honor of Dianne Bugg's birthday. I'm not sure this is what Dianne had in mind when she asked for a birthday piece using Reba McEntire's song 'Forever Love' but I have no control once I write the outline. So here goes. It's a Christmas story with Dianne's favorite song. This is sometime mid 3rd season. Part 1 Nat got out of the car and pulled her topcoat around her tightly. The temperature was finally dropping. It wasn't that she hated winter so much, it was just the cold that got to her more than anything else. She loved the snow, Christmas, and the ice on the lakes. It took her back to happier times when she stared at the frozen lake made of glass and mirrors. It was meant to beckon the young and the young at heart. She was never immune. It was a clear night, so clear you could almost see Venus without the aid of a telescope. She looked up at the sky and the North Star twinkled brightly at her, causing her to smile. Maybe she wasn't too old to wish upon a star, so she closed her eyes and made a wish. With a simple sigh and a bit of adult resignation, she finally smiled at the bright planet and voiced her thoughts out loud. "Too bad I don't believe in magic, but then again, life is too short not to cover your options." She heard the sirens in the distance and rushed inside to start to work. It was to be another busy night at the morgue. --------- "Nick! In my office, now!" Reese yelled out his door, just as Nick finished hanging up his leather topcoat. Tracy glared with an accusing eye from her side of the desk. "I haven't a clue, Trace, so don't give me that look. It's Christmas...I've been good!" Tracy rolled her eyes and mumbled under her breath. "I believe in Santa Claus, too." Nick sensitive hearing caught it and he snorted. Finally, he walked into the Captain's office. "What's up, Cap?" Nick's bright blue eyes met the Captain's. Reese tossed the call sheet for the next week onto his desk in front of Nick. "This is what's wrong, Nick. You switched shifts with Ryan on Friday to work Christmas Eve and Talbert on Saturday for the Christmas day. You were off both of them. I made sure of it this year." Reese stared at his star detective and wanted him to deny it. "That's right, Cap. They both have families and I don't. It just seemed fair. Sort of my Christmas present to those who needed it off. I know I don't act like I enjoy Christmas, but when you don't have any family, it's just not the same." Nick sat down before Reese told him to. "You've worked every Christmas and Christmas Eve since you joined the force. Most of the other holidays as well. I checked. It's not right, Nick. We share the load on my watch and there is no reason for you to carry more than your share. You do enough of that as it is. Denise has set another place for you on Christmas Day and I expect you to be there. We eat at 2, so come with a big appetite. That also means you can attend the precinct party on Christmas Eve. No excuses...be there!" Reese waited for Nick to object. "Captain, I appreciate the offer, but you forget one tiny little tidbit. I'm allergic to the sun...remember? Daylight, sunburn, really sick...and then I go pouf! It's really better if I work. It keeps me busy and gives the other guys a chance to be with their families." Nick prepared himself for the orders and threats. "Okay, Nick but that only gets you out of Christmas Day dinner. You work Christmas Day for Talbert, but you are off Christmas Eve and I expect you at the party. Understood?" Reese's 'don't question me tone' laced his voice and Nick decided it was the lesser of evils. "I'll be there, Cap. Realize it's under protest. I really hate eggnog and I've never been big on the amateur talent show stuff either. I'll be there if it makes you happy." Nick rose and headed for the door. "Well?" Tracy raised questioning eyes. "Nothing, Trace. The Captain just wanted to make sure I suffered with the rest of you at the Christmas party this year." Nick rolled his eyes in disgust. "Oh, come on, Nick. It will be fun. I'm told they have something special planned this year. The Coroner's department has control. Too bad Nat isn't going to be here. I'd love to see what she would come up with to entertain us." Tracy laughed at the thought. Nick drifted away. Nat was going to her sister-in-law's, Sarah, to visit for the holidays. A great sadness overwhelmed him, as it did every year this time. The holidays were meant for family and he didn't have one. Of course there was LaCroix, but he always left during the gaiety to go to a more civilized place. A place where they didn't bother with all the religious symbols and paraphernalia. Janette still wasn't speaking to him for bringing her back across, so it looked like another lonely night with a good book. "Earth to Nick!" Tracy snapped her fingers before her partner's eyes. "I said...did you have any luck getting those tickets for the concert the day after Christmas?" Tracy's eyes glistened with hope. "Oh yeah, Trace." He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out two tickets. "They're not great seats. This friend had connections...but I only could get two." Tracy's eyes saddened. "Oh? It's okay. I know you did your best." Nick reached over and handed her the tickets across the desk. "They're yours, Trace. Merry Christmas!" "Nick, you can't. She's only doing 2 shows and I know you're a big fan of hers. I couldn't." She stared at the precious tickets in her hands, then shoved them back at Nick reluctantly. "No, I insist, Trace. They're yours! You go and enjoy it for the both of us." Nick stood and grabbed his coat. "I'm going to run over to the Coroner's building and say goodbye to Nat before she leaves. I'll catch up with you later." He left her staring at him with her mouth open in disbelief. -------- Nat picked up the phone, and smiled when she heard Sarah's voice on the other end. "Hi, Sarah. What's up?" She loved her sister-in-law and niece, but this year she just didn't have her heart in going. She wanted to be elsewhere this Christmas, even though she hadn't been invited. Doubts crossed her mind once more about the rationality of getting involved with a full-blooded vampire, but she'd already passed the point of no return a long time ago. It still hurt when he hadn't asked her to spend Christmas with him. Once she got passed the pain, she got ticked and made her usual plans. "Nat, I know you had plans on coming up for Christmas, but I need a favor. I have an old college friend I haven't seen in years, coming to Toronto over the Christmas holidays...and I really wanted to see her. She's been having some trouble and needed someplace quiet and out of the way to stay, since the hotels are booked. I was wondering if maybe all of us could come visit you for Christmas and stay at your place. We'd do all the cooking. I'm sure you'd remember her if you saw her." Sarah took a deep breath, then continued. "I kind of got the impression you weren't too high on coming this year anyway, leaving that blond detective of yours behind. I don't understand why you and Nick don't just sit down and work it out. You're both miserable when you're apart." "It's okay, Sarah. You don't have to sell me, except there's one problem that I'll have to take care of. Well, actually more than one, but finding something to present for the talent performance at the precinct Christmas party will be the big problem. If I'm here, I'm expected to go and perform. You know as well as I do, that I don't sing nor dance well...and let's be honest...stand up comedy from a person who cuts up corpses for a living just doesn't make it." Nat groaned in despair, yet she felt lighter and happier than she had been in days. "I've got the perfect solution. Just trust me on this...and don't worry about a thing. I've got it covered. Amy and I will be there late tomorrow. See you then." Sarah rang off without explaining any further. ------- Nick walked through the door just as Nat hung up the phone. She stood staring at it perplexed. "A problem?" His soft voice was like music to her ears, and she couldn't keep her heart from skipping a beat. He always did that to her when he lowered his voice like that. She wondered if he did it on purpose. He smiled mischievously when she met his gaze. "You love to do that to me don't you, Nick Knight?" He feigned innocence and she frowned. "Right, an 800 year old innocent? I don't think so!" Nat sat down at her desk. "What brings your smiling face across my doorstep, Detective?" "I just came to say goodbye and see if you needed a ride to the airport. I was going to offer my chauffeur services." He bowed before her and pretended to tip his hat. "Oh, you mean the big, green, rolling tank limo service." She smirked as Nick feigned indignation. "It appears I'm not going to Montreal, after all. Sarah, Amy and a houseguest are coming here. An old friend of hers is going to be in town and they wanted to visit. The hotels are booked, so they are crashing at my place. So it looks like I'm here for the holidays and the Christmas Eve party." She shrugged with definite lack of enthusiasm. "I guess you're working as usual. Who did you bail out this time?" She knew Nick always traded with the family guys, but just once she wished he'd have asked her to stay and spend the holidays with him. Then again, that would be a commitment...and God forbid he do that. "It would appear, I'm not working Christmas Eve either. The Captain gave me an ultimatum. Either the Christmas Eve party, or dinner at 2 p.m. with his family on Christmas. Since I'm not fond of French-frying, I opted for the Christmas Eve party. Want to be tortured together? Maybe if I poured enough blood into the eggnog, I could keep from heaving in the bathroom long enough to make an appearance." Those hypnotic eyes of his looked hopefully into hers. "Are you asking me for a date, Nick Knight? I mean a real date, where you dress up and you pick me up in a car and everything?" She held her breath and waited. "I'm that bad?" He used the puppy dog look that undid her every time. "Stop that!" She smacked his arm. "You use that look like an art form. It's not going to work this time. Ask me properly and I'll give you an answer." She crossed her arms indignantly, not giving an inch until he did it right. "Okay...will you go with me to the Christmas Eve party. I promise to dress up and pick you up in a limo if you want, not the green tank?" "Better!" She smiled, then curtsied in front of him. "I'd be delighted to have you escort me, Nick, and the caddy will be fine, since I know how you feel about the piece of metal." Nick's cell phone rang and Nat's beeper. The both shrugged and knew what it meant. He leaned over and kissed her forehead. "Guess it's back to work...and a date!" He smiled, pleased to no end when she blushed. Part 2 Nick tossed his coat on the back of the chair and headed straight for the fridge. It had been a long night. Multiple suicides with no apparent reason didn't do much for his humor either. What caused people to be that depressed at Christmas time? Nick grabbed the green bottle from the fridge, pulled the cork with his teeth, and took a big swallow. The blood did little to ease his tension. He was certain Nat's wasn't much better, since she was technically off at midnight but was still working when he left. After all the commotion and hustle to get the bodies removed before the children got home, Nick had forgotten to ask Nat about the dress code for the party tonight. He'd never been before, so he supposed he'd better ask instead of embarrassing Natalie by showing up underdressed. He picked up the phone and dialed the morgue. She said it would take another couple of hours to complete the preliminaries. "Lambert!" Her voice sounded tired, but wonderful to his ears. He smiled into the receiver in spite of himself. "Hi Nat! It's me. I forgot to ask what the dress code was for tonight." "I'm glad you called, Nick. There's been a little glitch in our date." Her voice cracked, but she didn't seem to upset which puzzled him. Maybe she was just being nice and trying to bail him out again. "I'm sorry, Nat. Did I screw up again?" He waited and listened intently through the receiver. "Stop that, Nick Knight. You didn't do anything wrong. As a matter of fact, you were wonderful tonight with those kids. I knew you had it in you." She smiled, as her mind drifted back to Nick holding the youngest child in his arms to keep him from running into the ugly scene of his parents' death. Nick should have been a father. As much as he liked to deny it, he loved kids and they liked him. "It's just that my boss has volunteered me to MC the performance section of the party tonight. She said since I couldn't dance and nor sing, I could still use my mouth. So I'm the host of the 'Coroner's Department Talent Performance' for the 1995." She groaned. "Lucky me!" "Anyway, I have to go early, help with the setup, microphone placement, and all that garbage. There's no need for you to go that early, so I'll just meet you there if that's okay?" She waited while her heart skipped a beat. She tried to calm herself. She knew how sensitive his hearing was. Now was not the time to mess things up. "Okay, Nat, but I could come a little early and help after the sun sets, if you want." Something was amiss, but Nick couldn't put his finger on it. "No, don't worry about it Nick. You just show up at 7 p.m. and plan on bolstering my ego. I'm not much for speeches that don't relate to dead bodies. I'm rather out of practice." "What about dress code...casual or formal? You forget this is my first time." "Well people come both ways, except in jeans. Last year, the Captain wore a tux and so did some of the guys, but most of them were in suits. I'm wearing a long red gown because of my special duties, so wear something that doesn't make me feel more awkward than I already am. Oh, by the way, both wounds were self- inflicted. There were gunpowder marks on both victims' hands, and the bullet entry angle was right. The times of death are only minutes apart. Both guns test out to the bullets. It was a multiple suicide, and planned, it would appear. I just can't imagine what would be so awful to make them want to leave 2 little kids orphans." Nat sighed with regret. An unshed tear formed in her eye. "We'll get to the bottom of it, Nat. Maybe there were financial problems they just couldn't handle. I don't know now, but I will before it's done. Are you off shift anytime soon?" "I'm on my way out the door now. At least I'll get a couple hours of sleep before tonight. Sarah and Amy are out Christmas shopping, so the apartment will be quiet. You get some sleep, too. I need my date bright eyed, chipper, and willing to catch me if I fall off the stage." Nat laughed but her mind envisioned the whole thing, and it made her stomach cramp. Finally, she brushed it off. "See you tonight!" ----------- Nat had arrived an hour before sunset to help with the set up. She'd gotten time to go the beauty shop right before she arrived, so at least her hair was done. She'd brought her dress and shoes to change there. She wasn't sure how much set up was required for the DJ station and the stage lights, but she was going prepared. She was a bit nervous to begin with and maybe this would give her a little time to go over her introductions. Strange, but she was never nervous talking about physiology, cadavers or blood work to her peers...but this was different. This was personal and she was nervous. She only hoped Nick liked it when she was done. ----------- Nick toyed with the small box in his hand. Should he give it to her tonight or wait till later? Of course, maybe she already had plans with Sarah and Amy for after the party. He hadn't asked her to anything, except the party. He was such an idiot, but he stared and the small box, then flipped it open. Moments later he flipped it closed and stuck it in his pocket. He wasn't even sure she'd like it or if she'd take it, but he wanted her to have it. She had been his light for the past year so many times, he wanted her to feel special. He reached for his keys and topcoat, then headed for the door. ---------- Miller stood talking with Talbot, Janison and the new guy from the 53 rd, Adams. They'd already doctored the punch bowl and stood admiring the fine forms of their lady co-workers, along with some of the wives and girlfriends of their buddies. "And just who is that ravishing creature?" Adams lifted his glass to his lips, staring admiringly at the petite auburn haired woman in red. Miller and Talbot followed his gaze and dropped their glasses in unison. "I had no idea she looked that good!" Miller said when he finally found his tongue. "Damn, I always thought Natalie was pretty, but who would have thought she had a body too." Talbot grabbed another glass as the waiter went by and downed it quickly. All the time, he never took his eyes off Natalie's sleek form poured into the red dress. She moved slightly, exposing a creamy white thigh, while the gold sequins on the dress straps and the slit up the leg flashed brilliant colors around the room. Soft folds of material nestled at her hips in the back, underneath the plunging V that exposed her creamy skin. The front of the gown was a simple low cut rounded neckline, held up by thin straps beaded in gold sequins. It was elegant but provocative, and the red color of the velvet material accented the red highlights in her hair. The dress screamed 'touch me' when she walked. Natalie had managed to find 3-inch spike heels in a perfect match for the velvet. They made her appear graceful and classic as she moved around the room socializing. "Well, who is she? I'm in love...and if you tell me she's married to some flatfoot, I'm going to kill myself." Adams licked his lips unconsciously as he spoke, never once taking his eyes off Natalie. "Calm down, Romeo. You're barking up the wrong tree on that one." Miller snorted, then downed the rest of his drink that hadn't managed to spill on the floor. "And what is that suppose to mean? She's got a mean husband or boyfriend...no sweat. I haven't met a woman yet that I couldn't have...if I set my mind to it." Adam's straightened his suit and tie, then headed for his target. Miller grabbed his arm. "You want to put some money on that, Adams?" Miller smiled and Talbot laughed. "Okay, who is she? Let me have the scoop here." Adams wasn't a fool. His buddies knew something he didn't, and he wasn't foolish enough to lose good money without all the facts. "That's Dr. Natalie Lambert. She's one of the cities Medical Examiners. There isn't a guy on nights, and half the day shift, that hasn't made a run at her...but she's not biting. She's got eyes for only one guy, and trust me when I say...you don't want to get him ticked off." Miller rolled his eyes and flashed back to the time he'd made a pass at Nat and recalled Nick's reaction. "You're kidding, right? That's Natalie Lambert, the youngest woman ME in the city of Toronto? I thought she'd be a real dog considering what she does for a living. I've read some of the case files. She's supposedly the best in the city. The magistrate gives her credit for solving a half dozen homicides herself. I thought people who cut up bodies for a living smelled like formaldehyde and wore combat boots. She doesn't quite fit that picture." Adams continued to stare at Natalie, while she chatted with a group of patrolman who couldn't help but drool and look pathetic. They tried to manipulate her to stand under the mistletoe to steal a kiss, but were simply out maneuvered. "So who is this guy that she's got the hots for? Fill me in on the competition before I start off." He turned to his comrades, and waited for an explanation. "It's Detective Nick Knight...and believe me when I say...don't get him ticked. They don't call him the 'Knightmare' without a reason. It takes a lot to get him pissed, but when it comes to Dr. Lambert, he's not very tolerant. They'll both tell you they're just friends, but everyone in the department knows otherwise. Talk to his partner over there, Vetter. She'll tell you." "Knight? You mean the guy who only works night because of some strange allergy. You've got to be kidding, right? What would a beautiful woman want with a guy who has to be pale as a ghost, and never sees the light of day? I mean come on. He is probably not as good as all those arrest reports I read either. They are all blown out of proportion. We all know that. He's no different than the rest of us. We're all out there just doing our jobs." Adams sucked in his gut, then straightened his tie with his own self-importance. "Well I doubt half the woman on dayshift, and all the women on nightshift would agree. I know most of them have made a run at Knight to no avail. There is just something magnetic about him that women find attractive. As far as his record goes, I doubt you'll find anyone on nights that would not back those reports to the fullest. They'd all tell you Nick's probably done a lot more than what is on record. He might have a temper, but Nick is the best cop I've ever worked with. I'd trust him hands down over anybody in the department as my backup. He has risked his life numerous times without cause, and given up countless hours of off time so most of us could spend time with our families. He's coming tonight for the first time since he joined the force. Supposedly the Captain refused to let him work for someone else both Christmas Eve and Christmas. He's not much for socializing. He's a classic loner, but that doesn't stop the women from chasing him. Trust me when I say you have your hands full if you plan on trying to get between Nick and Natalie." Miller watched Natalie closely as some of the guys tried to steal a kiss from her and she tactfully managed to avoid them. She was a classy lady. He'd give his eyeteeth if she had paid him the slightest attention after his divorce. She was sweet and supportive, but that was it. Miller sighed with regret. "Well thanks for the info guys, but I'm going to give it a whirl anyway. Nothing ventured, nothing gained I always say." Adams took off after his quest. --------- Natalie evaded another quick set of hands from Sgt. Baker when he tried to pull her under the mistletoe. She laughed and kissed him on the cheek, then headed for another group. It wasn't often she caught men eyeing her closely, but Sarah and Amy had been right. The dress made a statement and looked quite good on her. When she tried it on it just screamed "Buy Me and See What Happens!" So when Sarah and Amy said it was made for her, she splurged and spent the money. She was glad she had now. It made her feel pretty for a change. She only hoped she got some sort of reaction out of Nick. Of course even in a $300 dress she was no comparison to Janette, but at least he would see she had some sort of figure. "Merry Christmas, Trace!" Nat leaned over and kissed Tracy on the cheek and gave her a hug, which was returned. "You look awesome, Nat!" Trace beamed as she eyed the dress. "Has Nick seen you yet?" "Not yet, Trace. He's late. I know he hates this sort of thing, but I sure hope he doesn't back out on me. I need all the support out here I can get, and we start in about 10 minutes. Tracy watched Adams cross the room with a determined look on his face. He'd developed quite a reputation since his transfer. He worked days and had never met Nat or herself, but when several of her friends called and told her to beware, she hadn't been looking forward to the encounter. Of course with Nat looking like she did tonight, she wasn't worried. "Look out, Nat. Here comes the latest precinct Romeo, and I think he has eyes for you. Where the Hell is Nick when you need him?" "Dr. Lambert and Detective Vetter, I presume?" Adams turned on the charm and flashed his pearly whites. "I'm Tony Adams and I don't think we've been introduced. I just transferred over from the 53rd and I wanted to introduce myself." Nat offered him her hand, which he turned and kissed immediately. "Nice to meet you, Detective. Glad to have you with us." Tracy offered her hand, which he shook perfunctorily. She just smiled. "Could I offer you ladies a drink?" Adams turned and pulled 2 drinks off the waiter's tray he'd signaled earlier. He handed them to the girls without waiting for an answer. He stepped back as he handed Natalie her glass. "I just wanted to tell you how stunning you looked in that dress, Dr. Lambert or can I call you Natalie?" He waited and Nat smiled at his coy tricks. "Natalie's fine, Tony. We try not to use titles in this precinct. It gets rather cumbersome in our department, as well as yours. "Could I ask who did your gown? It's just breathtaking, or should I say the lady wearing it is." He stepped back one more step slowly under the mistletoe and pretended to casually admire the dress, when in his mind she was already naked beneath his lips. Nat watched him use his body language and eyes to try and lure her toward him. He was really stuck on his own male prowess, which caused her to smile. "It's only a Ralph Lauren, Detective, but I'm flattered you like it." She waited for his next move. When Natalie didn't move toward him, he decided to switch tactics. "I was just wondering if you'd honor me with a dance later this evening." He stared directly at Nat and didn't include Tracy in the invitation. "The lady already has her dance card filled tonight, Detective!" Nick smooth voiced oozed over the three of them as he laced his arm protectively around Nat's waist, then glared into Adams eyes. "I don't think we've met." Nick offered his hand to Adams with a no nonsense look in his eyes. "I'm Nick Knight and you are?" Part 3 Adams clasped Knight's hand firmly, with the intent of showing strength. The grip he encountered was like steel. Adams had the distinct impression Knight fought the urge to crush his hand. Not that he thought it would have been a good idea himself, but Knight was not at all what he expected. Before him stood a self-confident magnetic man, who exuded strength and power with the confidence of one much older. His eyes held you motionless until he decided to release you, and Adams felt almost breathless. "Tony Adams, Detective. It's a pleasure to meet you." He stared at Nat's immediate reaction to Nick's arm around her waist. He decided it might be wise after all to back off. "Well, I see I'm interrupting, so I'll just leave you three to catch up. It was a pleasure meeting you." Adams made a quick exit for his buddies across the room, who immediately broke into laughter. "Thanks, Nick!" Nat hugged him closely. I thought I was going to be dragged bodily under the mistletoe if you hadn't arrived." Nat watched Adams disappear behind the punch bowl and join Miller and Talbot. "It's that dress. I've heard nothing but comments about the lady in red, since I walked in the door. I didn't know it was my date until I spotted you across the room. Nick pushed her to arm's length and admired the dress. "You look incredible!" Nat blushed, but was thrilled he liked it. She finally noticed his tux and the red bow tie and cummerbund. The tux was made of silk and fit him like a glove. The red color from the tie was not only festive, but matched the red velvet in her dress to a tee. "And you look very dashing yourself." She reached up and straightened his tie. "I love the tie, and here I only thought you owned dark colors." She smiled but let her eyes show her appreciation. "Well, I'm going to leave you two and go pick up my date. He should be ready by now. I'm going to have to hurry if I plan on seeing at least some of the show." Tracy handed Nick her glass, then made a quick exit. "I wonder if it's Vachon or someone else?" Nat whispered softly as Tracy headed for the exit. "I doubt it. Vachon, and a bunch of the others from the Raven, left town a few days ago. There is too much holiday cheer and temptations from the intoxicated crowd. Lots of accidents happen at Christmas." Nick sighed sadly, then turned back to Nat. "Did you get everything set up for the performance? I was told it was to be quite a show tonight." Nick smiled as Nat blushed. "Oh come on, Nick. This is really hard for me. It's not like I'm lecturing on something I know lots about. I'm really nervous about this." Her eyes sparkled in the bright lights and the anxiety she felt shown through in spite of her efforts. "I'm sorry, Nat, but you will be great and you said you were only MCing the thing...not performing in it." He placed both her hands in his. "Besides, it gives me a chance to watch you in the spotlight where you belong, and others will finally see what I've seen all along." She stared at him confused. "And what is that, Nick?" "That you are a bright, beautiful woman full of life and love, who is not afraid to share." He affectionately ran his fingers down the smooth skin on her cheek while his eyes never left hers. "You look gorgeous, Natalie, and I'm honored to be your date." Her heart did flip-flops and she stopped breathing when he touched her. He always had that affect on her. She'd made the right decision. Tonight she would tell him how she felt and let the chips fall where they may. She must be nuts, but tonight she would follow her heart instead of her head. "I'm going to have to go start the program. You'll stand right over here where I can see you, right?" She let her insecurities creep into her voice just slightly. Nick laughed, then took one step sideways, to be next to the tall, green ficus tree decorated for Christmas. "I'll be right here next to the big white angels. If that's not a contradiction, nothing is!" She started to walk away, but he held onto her hand. "Wait, Nat. I have something for you." He reached into his pocket and withdrew the small case he placed there earlier. "I brought you Christmas present. I was going to give it to you the other night before you left, but when you said you were going to stay, I decided to wait until tonight." He handed her the long velvet box with a silver ribbon wrapped around it. "Merry Christmas, Nat." Natalie stared at the case speechless, then opened it. Inside sat a beautiful tennis bracelet of diamonds and gold. The pattern was unique and the diamonds sparkled brilliantly, catching every piece of light that came near them. She gasped as the light danced off the bracelet. Nick picked it up. "Give me your arm." She did, and he fastened it to her wrist. "Nick...I...they...they are beautiful. I don't know what to say." She stared at the bracelet that gracefully adorned her wrist. "Say you like it." He said softly. "When I saw it, the diamonds reminded me of how much light you have brought into my life since I met you." He waited cautiously not certain what she thought. She leaned over and kissed him softly on the lips. "I love it, Nick. It's way too expensive, but the fact that you think I'm worth diamonds means more to me than you know. Thank you! I shall wear them always." She wrapped her arms around him and hugged him, which he reciprocated. When he released her, their eyes met once more. She wanted him to kiss her so bad, but now was not the time nor the place and they both knew it. "I had better get going, before they send a search party after me." He released her. She stared at the bracelet once more, then back at him and smiled. Part 4 ------------ Nat walked on to the stage a few minutes later. The cheers and catcalls all went up at the same time. Oh how the precinct loved to rib the department in charge of the entertainment! Every year it was a challenge to find a new way to make them feel conspicuous and awkward while they performed. It was expected, and everyone tried to take it in stride. "Hey, Natalie. You gonna dance in that number?" Rice from traffic screamed loudly from the back row. "We're all ready." A loud cheer and applause broke out throughout the room. Nat blushed, then curtsied for them all showing a little more thigh. Her actions brought more hoots and bawdy comments. "Okay, okay, guys! And here I believed you only thought I was good for cutting up dead things!" "Anything...anytime, if you wear that dress, Doc." Miller volunteered from the bachelors' corner, which brought more cheers and catcalls. Nat laughed, but was secretly flattered. She watched Nick from the corner of her eye. He was starting to tense as she flirted with them. "Well, I'm flattered but alas I can't dance nor sing, so I'm your MC tonight for our show. We have several great performances for you tonight and a special treat. So sit back, relax, drink your eggnog, or should I say spikenog, and enjoy. I give you Santa's Elves from the cold room, singing 'Santa Claus is Coming to Toronto'. Jill, Megan, and Natalie's boss popped through the curtain to sing and dance in elf costumes. When they finished, they were followed by a clever rendition of 'The Night before Christmas' with the entire staff and Nat as the narrator. Both numbers brought uproarious laughter and loud applause. Nat approached the microphone one more time. "Now as a finale, I have a very special Christmas present for my best friend. He's been there for me so many times this year I wanted to give him something special...and I'm sure he won't mind sharing with his fellow co-workers." Nat smiled at Nick. "Merry Christmas, Nick!" Nat hit the stage curtain release and the drapes began to pull apart. Reba McEntire stepped through, wearing tight black jeans, a red leather jacket with rhinestones embedded in the sleeves over a white silk blouse trimmed in black satin cord. Applause broke out throughout the room. Several whistles came across loudly and cheers went up throughout. Reba bowed, waved, and smiled then finally got them to quiet down. "Well, I guess you know who I am." She turned to Nat who stood watching Nick's reaction. She'd finally managed to surprise him. Nick stared in awe. She followed her gaze to the blond man Natalie stared at. "I guess this means you finally surprised him, Natalie." Natalie laughed, then joined Reba on stage. "I want to thank Reba for coming tonight. She has offered to sing a few songs from her show tomorrow night as a favor to me. So I expect you all to behave yourself and show her that we fans in Toronto are not as crazy as they are in the states." Reba leaned over and hugged Natalie, then picked up her microphone. "Well, I don't have the band with me tonight, but I did bring the accompaniment. So if you all will bear with me, I'd like to sing you a few songs from our Christmas album. Oh, and by the way, Natalie..." she caught Nat's attention as she stepped down from the small stage, "I've never been a Christmas present before. I'm flattered...and I want to meet him." She pointed to Nick standing by the tree who still stood in shock. "He does talk, doesn't he?" She laughed at Nick's expression. Nat walked over and placed her arm around his waist possessively. "Only sometimes, Reba...but I'll work on him for you." Nat laughed and Reba cued the music on the remote in her hand. She sang several Christmas songs, followed by 'Is There Life Out There?'. She jumped down from the stage and sang several more Christmas carols, 'It's Your Call' and had the entire precinct join in. When she finished, she was back on stage one last time. "Now, it's getting late and I'm sure you all want to get home to your families and put toys together for your kids..." The crowd screamed "NOOOOO!!!!! We want more!!!!" She laughed and smiled at the whole crowd. "You've all been a great crowd, but I've got one last song to sing, and then I've got to get back. So I'm going to sing one of my favorites, as a special request for my friend Natalie, who's shown me such hospitality I can never repay." She smiled at Nat, still standing by Nick with her arms wrapped around him. "I give you..."Forever Love". The music rose softly and Reba's voice echoed softly through the room. The first time I laid my eyes on you I knew We'd spend this life side by side I still feel the same though you're so far away I swear that you'll always be my Forever love I promise you Someday we'll be together Forever love I won't give up No matter what I'll be waiting for you Forever love Nick listened intently as did the rest of the group. The song brought out the passion, loss, and determination in the woman who sang it, as well as everyone who listened. Natalie had chosen that song. Many times he'd played it at the loft wishing...wondering if she ever knew just how much she meant to him. That song...this song put into words what he'd felt, why he couldn't leave after Schanke died. He could never give her up and prayed she'd wait for him. The song continued. Minutes and hours and years may go by But my heart knows nothing of time So don't cry, just keep me right there In your dreams And hold on to these words of mine Forever love I promise you Someday we'll be together Forever love I won't give up No matter what I'll be waiting for you Forever love The words seeped into his soul and the melody touched his heart, just as Nat had so many years ago. She loved him in spite of him being a vampire. The news brought such joy to his heart, he thought he would die. Was this possible? Could Natalie love him that much? He stared into her bright eyes and saw the answer. Without hesitation he pulled her lips to his. The warmth, the joy, the happiness he'd long told himself could never exist between a vampire and mortal were washed away. She responded to him with passion and love not revulsion. He was lost to the feel of her in his arms. Love is the road to our destiny Nothing can change what is meant to be Forever love I promise you Someday we'll be together Forever love I won't give up No matter what I'll be waiting for you Forever love As the music faded, the applause rose and the cheers began. Nick and Nat were lost to it all. Tracy watched Nick and Natalie and said a prayer of thanks. "It's about time." She worked her way to their side and cleared her throat loudly. "I think Reba's done singing, guys." Her words slowly seeped into Nick's brain and he released Nat with a sigh. He ran his fingertips down her beautiful face and still couldn't believe she was willing to proclaim her feelings to the world. If it was possible, he loved her even more, but this was not the time or place. "We need to talk..." "I know, Nick...I..." She couldn't find the words. His lips, the emotions he brought forth in her were so complicated, so intense, so unfamiliar...it scared her, but excited her at the same time. Reba stepped down off the stage and began making her way through the crowd accepting all the praise and thanks. She finally stopped in front of Nick and Natalie, who stood arm and arm in deep conversation. Reba had watched them from the stage. She felt wonderful. Love was such a tricky thing. She was just elated to play any part in these two getting together. She listened to Sarah and Amy talk about Aunt Natalie and Nick for 2 days. Sarah said they were meant to be together, and she couldn't figure out what kept them apart. They just needed a little push. Well, apparently it had worked and Reba was thrilled. She cleared her throat. "From the look on your face and from what I saw from the stage, I take it he liked his present, Nat?" Nat turned to face her, slightly embarrassed. "Oh, Reba. It was wonderful. Thank you so much for coming tonight." Nat turned and held Nick's arm. "This is Nick Knight." Reba offered Nick her hand. "It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Nick. Amy talks constantly about you. You're her hero." Nick grasped her hand and shook it gently. "The pleasure is all mine, Ms. McEntire. I want to add my thanks and appreciation for your performance. I don't claim to understand any of this, but I'm sure I'll get the answers soon enough." He cast a warning eye to Nat letting her know he expected answers. Reba reached into her back jean pocket and pulled out two tickets, then handed them to Nick. "I understand you gave up your seats as Christmas present to someone who couldn't get any. I think unselfish behavior should be rewarded. It's my way of saying thanks to Nat for offering me her home so I could visit with Amy and Sarah." Nick stared at Reba speechless, then back to Natalie. "I'm not even going to pretend I understand any of this." Questioning blue eyes turned to Nat. Both women laughed. "Reba and Sarah went to college together. They were actually roommates for awhile. When Sarah called and said she wanted to visit with her and the hotels were booked, I offered them my place. No big deal...I work nights, remember? Anyway, Reba asked how she could repay me. I told her I had a special friend who was a big fan, but gave away his seats as a Christmas present. I asked if she could autograph something for you for Christmas. Reba thought this might be better. Did you like it?" Nat smiled mischievously. Nick pulled Nat into his arms and kissed her forehead, then laughed. "You amaze me, Natalie!" Nick turned back to Reba once more. "I've never had a better Christmas present. Thank you, and thank you for the tickets. I WON'T be giving these away." Nick smiled that boyish grin that turned Nat's legs to Jell-O, and Reba wasn't immune. "He's adorable, Nat...and a keeper. Don't let him get away from you." She chuckled. "You are quite welcome, Nick. You both have a Merry Christmas! I've got to run, some of the band will be in tonight and I promised to pick them up." She waved good-bye to all and disappeared out the side door. ----------- The party began to break up a little while later. Nat was congratulated and thanked profusely by all. It was a special treat they would never forget, and they expected full details on Monday as to how she knew Reba McEntire. Nat promised a full explanation after Christmas. She wrapped her arm around Nick's and they made their way to the caddy. He opened the door for her, then crawled in the other side. He turned and pulled both of her hands into his. "Thank you for my Christmas present. That was incredible." Nat leaned over and kissed him softly. "You are welcome, Nick Knight. Now you promised to feed me as I recall." She raised a questioning eye. "And where would you like to eat...Chinese, Italian, anything milady wishes?" Nick picked up her hand and kissed it in a knightly manner. "Italian sounds good. Do you think anything is still open?" She looked skeptical. "If not, I'll fix it for you myself." He started the car. "I think that would be unique in itself. I've never seen you cook." She laughed. "As a matter of fact, I've never even watched you pop popcorn. Can you cook?" She eyed him closely and waited. He smiled. "Okay, the grocery it is and I shall dazzle you with my talents." Part 5 ---------- Natalie and Nick rode the lift up with their arms full. Natalie changed her mind on Italian, and insisted on a traditional Christmas dinner. It was a little late to thaw a turkey, so they settled for ham instead. They laughed and talked about the performance that evening, both avoiding the last song carefully. Nick used his foot to slip open the lift door and stepped in to hit the light switch. When he sat the bags down and grabbed Nat's to set them on the counter, he noticed the tree standing majestically by the fireplace. A 9-foot blue spruce graced the corner completely unadorned. Nick turned to Nat. "You thought I was a bit drab for Christmas?" He smiled knowing how she felt about Christmas trees. "I just couldn't stand the idea of you not having a Christmas tree. So when I found this one today, I had it sent over." She walked over and opened a box on the floor. "I had some of my stuff sent over from the apartment, then added a few more." She looked at him a bit insecure. "I just thought maybe we could decorate it together. I know it was presumptuous on my part, and you never invited me, but I just wanted you to feel like you were a part of something...part of a family...part of humanity...part...." She was rambling. Nick walked over and placed his fingers on her lips to silence her, stared into her bright blue eyes filled with doubt, then he kissed her. At first it was soft, then more forceful, as he deepened the kiss and ran his tongue into her mouth. She opened and gave him free access. Reluctantly, he broke the kiss for her to breathe. "I would love to have you decorate the tree with me. It's beautiful, just as you are. I don't know what I've done to deserve you, but I hope it never changes." He kissed her forehead. "I know I don't have the right to drag you away from your family, but I'd be honored if you would spend Christmas with me." He waited with hope in his eyes. She smiled and caressed his face lovingly. "I thought you'd never ask." He pulled her into his arms, held her tight, then kissed the top of her head. "You want to eat first, or decorate the tree?" "You fix me a sandwich, while I unbox the decorations. Maybe we should pop some popcorn and string it, too." He kissed her forehead once more. "I'm off to the kitchen. You start unboxing, but you might want to change clothes first. Not that I don't love that dress on you, but it might be difficult to move around in." He ran his hand across her shoulder. "Why don't you put some of my stuff on? They'll be a little big, but I promise not to laugh if you lose your pants." She cuffed he on the sleeve slightly for his remark. "I'll find a belt to hold them up. Maybe that one with the silver buckle you like so much!" She smirked, then dashed up the stairs before he had time to object. ------------ They'd stopped several times to admire their progress and pop more popcorn. Natalie had devoured 2 sandwiches and Nick an entire bottle of his usual liquid diet. Natalie even poured the third glass. He marveled at her control...no lectures, no recriminations and no protein shakes tonight. Tonight, they accepted each other just as they were. He looked at her questioningly when she poured the third glass. "You have to eat, too, Nick." She handed him the glass she'd filled when she was in the kitchen. He took one sip and recognized it as LaCroix's special reserve. He stopped instantly and stared at her. "Yes, I know it's human, but LaCroix assured me it was donated freely. It's part of what you are. It's taken me a long time to understand that. I don't understand the bloodlust, but I understand needs, Nick...and you need human blood from time to time to keep you in control. I've watched your blood cells after you've consumed human blood. They are calmer, more tranquil, at peace with their surroundings. When you go without it, they are agitated, highly active and require lots of your energy to survive. You are in a constant battle with yourself without human blood. I'm amazed it doesn't cause you physical pain." She stared at him with admiration in her eyes. He lowered his eyes in humiliation. "Don't Nick! Don't ever be ashamed of what you are around me. You are my best friend and I accept you as you are. That's what friends do." He stared at her and saw the pain in her eyes. She wanted more and they both knew it. "You are more than my friend and you know it, Natalie Lambert...we both know it." He touched her face and wanted to kiss her again, but it would lead to things he wasn't sure she was prepared for. He wasn't sure he was prepared for it either, so he backed off...and that hurt her as well. She took a deep breath, then regrouped and changed the subject. "Well...which shall it be? Angel or star?" Slightly confused, but understanding the need to slow down, he looked puzzled. "Angel or star for the top of the tree? It's your choice, since you have to put it up there. I don't fly, remember?" She held up the star in one hand and the angel in the other. "Star I think, but you get the honors." She looked at him puzzled. He scooped her up in his arms, then flew her to the top of the tree. She latched onto his neck when they rose from the floor. She loved the feel of him. When they were 10 feet off the floor, he felt her almost child-like excitement. She loved it and he sensed it immediately. "You're not scared?" She leaned in and kissed him. "I love it, Nick. Take me flying. I want to feel the wind in my hair and the night sky like you see it." She looked at him hopefully. He smiled. "Okay, but first the star..." He eyed the object in her hand. She nodded and together they placed it on the tree. Nat connected the light string to it and they moved back slightly, still suspended in the air to make sure it was straight. "Make a wish!" He whispered into her ear. Part 6/Adult She closed her eyes and wished with all her heart, then he slowly lowered them to the floor. When he placed her feet on the floor, he reached over and turned on the lights. The tree blinked, sparkled, and finally burst to life with white lights that twinkled slowly. The star shown like a steady beacon, lighting the whole loft with a soft white light generating hope in the warmth of its rays. The darkness was banished to the recesses of the corners, and a feeling of happiness and love filled the room. "It's beautiful, Nat." He leaned over and kissed her cheek. "Thank you!" They stood admiring it. She just relished the feel of his arms around her and relaxed at the peace she felt within him. It was going to be a great Christmas after all. He turned and sat her on the couch, just as the clock on the wall sounded 3 a.m. "Sit there, I'll be right back." He disappeared upstairs and returned with a huge silver wrapped box. "Merry Christmas, Nat!" He handed it to her. "But Nick, you already gave me a Christmas present." She stared at the package that took up her whole lap. "Just open it." She tore it open to find a full-length, dark brown, butter- soft, leather coat. She squealed with delight. It was similar to the one Nick wore that she admired so much. She touched the leather and it felt like satin under her fingertips. "Well, put it on. Let me see if it fits." He stood her up and helped her slip it on. It fit like a glove. He turned her around to face him as he buttoned it up. "I was right." He smiled, proud of himself. "Brown was the right color. It brings out the fire in your hair." She ran her hands up and down the sides, enjoying the feel of it. "I love it, Nick, but I..." He silenced her again with his finger. "Look in the box." She turned and dug deeper into the box. She pulled out a cream angora fur, pantsuit. The ivory cowl collar screamed 'touch me' and she couldn't resist. It was magnificent. She turned to thank him. "I don't know what to say, Nick. They are beautiful." "Just go put them on and I'll fly you to my favorite spot." Nick waited for her at the foot of the steps, admiring the tree while she changed. When he heard her heartbeat, he turned. She stood at the top of the steps covered in leather and angora. The contrast between the cream and the brown leather simply was breathtaking. The lights from the tree caught the highlights in her hair, making it gleam with copper and gold. At the same time, it gave her an almost angelic look at the top of the stairs. He noticed she'd found the matching deerskin, leather boots to go with the pantsuit. "You look absolutely incredible, Natalie." He stared as she walked gracefully down the stair, never once releasing his eyes from hers. She wrapped her arms around his neck and found his lips. Passion exploded between the two of them, as their tongues dueled, and his hands caressed her body. The feel of the leather under his fingertips only made him want to touch what was beneath. Unable to control the urge, he wove his hands under her coat with no objection from her. Her own hands kneaded and caressed his shoulders and pulled him closer, as his lips wove a magic spell between them. She had to retreat to catch her breath, so he nuzzled her neck. She arched into him, enjoying the feel of his hands and lips on her body. They were playing with fire, but neither one of them could stop. When she'd finally caught her breath, she ran her fingers through his hair and brought his lips back to hers until he moaned in need of more. Realizing what was happening and afraid of his own beast, he pulled back hesitantly. Now she groaned in denial. "Nick, don't stop..." He placed his forehead to hers and tried to slow his breathing. He knew gold dusted his eyes, and he was afraid to meet hers. She forced him to look at her, but he tried to turn away. "No, Nick! It's okay, I understand." Her bright eyes met his gold ones filled with shame. "Not tonight, Nick Knight. I accept the vampire as well as the man." She kissed him softly. "I take it you like the look and the feel?" "Touch me leather, and feel me angora...I think I see a trend here." She smiled at him when he almost blushed. "Why, Nick Knight, if I didn't know better I'd swear you had something else on your mind besides eating." Mischief filled her eyes as she watched him squirm, then decided to let him off. "I didn't say I didn't like the idea, did I?" Relief flooded his features. He found her lips once more and the passion built again. This time she broke it off and stepped back, eliciting a growl from his chest. Gold dusted his eyes, filled with lust and something much more powerful. She watched in fascination and marveled at his control. He could use his powers on her, but he hadn't. "Nat, I'm..." This time she placed her fingers to his lips. "I have another Christmas present for you, too, Nick. I want you to have it tonight. Wait right here, while I go get it. It's still in the car." She started to step back, but he caught her before she escaped and found her lips again. "Get it later, Nat." His tongue found hers and she almost gave in to the feel of him. "No!" She broke free gasping for breath. "I want you to have it tonight. Wait right here. I'll be right back." She dashed out of his grasp and headed for the lift. Five minutes later she returned. Nick paced the floor in front of the tree. He'd gone too far. He'd scared her away...and she should have been scared. He must have been out of his mind, but tonight he felt more human than he had in centuries. It was because of Nat, but he'd never forgive himself if he hurt her. She'd realized her mistake and had taken off. The lift kicked on and his heart lurched into his mouth. Nat stepped out of the lift still wearing the leather coat he'd given her. He looked her over from head to toe, then noticed the high heels. He was confused. She walked toward him gracefully and stopped within arm's length. "I wasn't sure if you'd like it or not, but since you gave me 'touch me leather' and 'feel me angora', I thought you'd like it after all." Slowly she unbuttoned her coat and let it slip off her shoulders to the floor. He dropped his mug and his mouth flew open. She wore nothing but a red velvet teddy, trimmed in white lace and fur. "I made a wish, Nick. I wished I could make you forget the vampire for just one night.". He was beside her immediately. "Do you know what you're doing, Natalie?" She placed his hands on the velvet, found his lips, and whispered. " Merry Christmas, Nick!" Lust overwhelmed him as her warmth and trust seeped into his fingertips. Ever so slowly, he ran his hands up the flat of her stomach over the soft fabric. The soft smooth feel of the velvet made him want to feel the woman beneath. His hand stopped just below her breast and his eyes sought hers. She reached and covered his hand with hers. "Touch all of me, Nick. I want you to feel everything I am and let me love you...all of you." She sought his lips as she placed his hand over her breast. Nick was lost to the feel of her lips, her pounding heart, the smooth fabric under his touch. He kneaded her breast until it became a hard nub under his touch. He kissed and sucked his way to the other, then licked it until she arched and moaned in his grasp. She felt and tasted so good. He wanted to feel her satin skin under his mouth, his hands, his body. Her warmth beckoned the man as her heartbeat summoned the vampire. He found the zipper in the back, then freed her from the tiny piece of cloth that kept him from his desires. His hands caressed the warm skin of her back and buttocks as he pulled her hard against him. He licked his way up her neck to her mouth and sucked her lips, gently at first, then devoured her mouth with his. His fangs had dropped and she wrapped her tongue around them, one at a time. Each stroke drove him crazy with desire for her. Was it her blood or her body he wanted more? At this point, he didn't know, nor did he care. All he knew was he had to feel every inch of her and make her one with him or go insane. She tore her mouth away from his, then ripped open his shirt. Quickly she pressed her warm breasts against his cool chest and licked his neck. She found the vein at the base of his throat and sucked hard until he growled in frustration. He picked her up and carried her to the rug in front of the fireplace. He laid her naked body down in front of the fire and followed. He found her lips, wrapped his fingers in her hair, and crushed her lips to his. She ran hot fingers down his sides, tried to release his belt buckle and whined in frustration. "I want to feel you, Nick. Take them off. Let me feel all of you." He stood and quickly shed his pants. Now he stood gloriously naked before her gaze. She reached to him with both arms. "Come to me, Nick. Let me love you, let me touch you, feel you, be a part of you." Passion laced with love was etched into her beautiful face...and he could deny her nothing. Nick lay down on top of her slowly, carefully letting his cool hard body create a delicious friction between them. Her hands roamed the hard planes of his back down to his tight ass, memorizing every inch, as her lips kissed their way down his neck and chest. He rubbed his hard cock between her thighs, bathing himself in her sweet juices that flowed freely. His lips found her breast and suckled gently, then more forcefully as it began to harden in his mouth. His fangs ached for fulfillment, but his body wanted all of her. He grabbed his hard manhood and rubbed it into her clit. She stopped kissing him briefly to moan in appreciation. Her body was ready for his, and he ached to bury himself in her hot core. Gold dusted his eyes, but he wanted more than her blood. He wanted to be a part of her that would go beyond blood. In 800 years, he'd never felt the physical desire to be a part of someone in more than their blood. His heart physically hurt without knowing she loved him. He needed to know what she felt was beyond physical lust, beyond passion, but something more. The taste of him, the feel of his body on hers made her hot beyond anything she'd ever dreamed. She wanted to crawl into his skin, into his blood, make him a part of her that he could never leave behind. She hurt in places she never knew existed, and her heart cried out for fulfillment. If he left her now, she would die. She loved both the man and the vampire. She had to be a part of him or die. "Love me, Nick. Love me like I love you or I'll perish." Need filled her eyes and he recognized it immediately. In one swift motion he buried his hard shaft deep inside her. She gasped at the feel of him within her. He balanced on his elbows and held her head between his hands. "Don't let me hurt you, Nat. I love you so much it hurts. Help me...I'm so scared I'll hurt you." Fear was written in his eyes, along with the passion that he tried valiantly to keep under control. She moved underneath him pushing him further inside her and he groaned. "Please, Nat...I want to bury myself inside you forever. I want to be a part of you..." She moved again and he was lost. He pulled out to rub her clit, then plunged back deep within her again and again. She met him stroke for stroke, taking him fully, and it still wasn't enough for either of them. "You can't hurt me, Nick." She panted between strokes and groaned in frustration. "I want you deeper inside me. I want to feel you come to me, every inch of you. Touch me!" Her voice cracked between the words as he built the desire and passion within them both. He lifted her legs, wrapped them around his waist, and buried himself so deep inside her that he touched her core. She screamed in pleasure, then he rocked the head of his hard cock on her cervix, until her body crashed over the edge and she began to contract around his hard shaft. He was lost in the sensation and pleasure he'd long forgotten ever existed. Love flooded over him as he ground the head of his penis over her center until his own body's needs caused him to explode, buried deep inside her. His entire body screamed to be one with her and make her pregnant with his child. His cock convulsed and pushed his seed deep within her loins as he screamed her name in release! They held onto each other and let their bodies become one in passion and lust, based on love. A great peace and warmth engulfed them both. Nick's breathing was erratic and his heart beat irregularly. Perspiration soaked them both as they came back to reality. Frightened blue eyes searched hers as Nick checked her pulse, then her neck. He watched her labor to breathe beneath him. "Nat...Nat, tell me you're okay." Fear laced his voice as he pushed hair away from her delicate features. Finally catching her breath, she reached up to touch his worried face. "You could never hurt me, Nick. You love me." She smiled in relief because it was true. Nick actually loved her. All the fears of her feelings being one-sided disappeared, and she wrapped her arms around him elated. "You actually love me, too. I was so afraid it was one sided, that I wasn't your type, not pretty enough, just your friend, I was sure you couldn't..." He silenced her with a kiss. "I have waited all my life to love you, Natalie." He caressed her face under his hands. "I was terrified I'd kill you if I let myself love you this way. Nick smiled and checked her neck one more time to make sure he'd not taken her blood, then he noticed the star blinking above him. He sighed in contentment, then rested his forehead on hers. "What?" She caressed his face and bathed herself in the warmth she felt from him. He glanced back up at the star. "My wish came true. I wished I could love you without hurting you...and I did." He kissed her soundly, still amazed but thankful. She kissed him passionately back, then released his lips. "I think we need to wish more often, but just in case...let's not push it. Wait right here." He let her up, and she scampered to the kitchen. When she returned, she knelt on the floor beside him and handed him a mug filled with blood. The smell enticed the vampire and he drank. With the first taste, he knew it was hers. He stopped and stared into her eyes. She forced the cup back to his lips and made him drink. "I made a wish, too...I want to be a part of you, Nick, both body and soul. I wanted you to prove to yourself the man wanted me more than the vampire, but I want the vampire to know I'm in love with the whole package. No more secrets, no more running away...you know what's in my blood now and what I want. Tell me you want the same thing, too, or make me forget I ever met you. I can't go on anymore the way we are." She waited. He finished the blood and relaxed into the essence of what she was, then opened his eyes. He pulled her into his arms and kissed her with all the passion he felt in her blood, matched only by his own for her. Finally, he broke the kiss and held her face in his hands. "I will love you forever, Natalie. I want us to be together in the light, but if that's not possible, then I want you to come with me into the darkness. I can't live without you." He leaned down and retrieved his keys out of the pocket of his jeans. With minimal effort, he removed a key from the keyring. "How do you think Syd will take to a bigger place?" She smiled and clasped the key into her hand like a treasure. "You'll have to get used to sharing a bed you know. Syd is really protective." Happiness and love filled her eyes. Nick kissed her, then chuckled. "I can live with that as long as he doesn't tear up my Christmas present." He leaned over, picked up the velvet teddy and let it dangle between his fingers. "By the way...I love my Christmas present." The doorbell rang. "Are we expecting company?" He glanced at the clock and noticed it was only 7 a.m. Nat smiled, then kissed him on the nose. "That would be Sarah and Amy...I invited them for Christmas dinner." Her eyes sparkled with mischief and she kissed him again. "Kids are up early on Christmas. "By the way, I hope you can really cook." She chuckled at his expression as she reached for her leather coat on the floor, then headed for the door. When she reached the monitor, she turned. "Although, I love you like that, Nick..." She stared at him nude body before her. "It might be a little hard to explain to Amy..." He stared at himself, then quickly grabbed his pants off the floor. "Oh, by the way, did I mention Reba's coming, too?" He dropped his pants in horror, which caused her to laugh even more. "Welcome to the family, Nick!"
