Okay! I thought I'd give it another shot, since my last one got such good reviews. Hope you like it. FK characters do not belong to me , I'm just borrowing them from Sony/TriStar. I'll give them back in a bit. The song 'Only You' is not mine either, but I don't know who owns the copyright. Permission granted to post on fkfic-l and Mel's fkfanfic site. Enjoy! Only You *Nick shook his head as he gazed at the assortment of dolls on display. He couldn't believe how difficult this choice was going to be. "Nat? How about this one?" He asked, holding up a Cabbage Patch doll. "Nick, she's thirteen, not three. I don't think that's what she had in mind." Nat replied. She picked up a beautiful china doll, dressed in red brocade and black velvet. "Oh, my. This is wonderful." She glanced at the price tag, then quickly set it down. Nick picked up the doll. "Do you think she'd like this one?" He asked her. Nat smiled. "It's a hundred and fifty dollars, Nick." "Yeah? Do you think she'd like it?" He asked again. Nat shook her head in exasperation. "Yes. I think she'd love it." Nick walked over to the sales counter and handed the doll to the clerk. He pulled out his credit card. "I'd like this gift-wrapped, please." He watched as the sales clerk turned to wrap up the doll. After a few moments, he noticed Nat was no longer standing beside him. Turning to look for her, he spotted her looking at the musical snow globes. Nat stood motionless, staring at the beautiful, transparent globe before her. It depicted a 'father' teddy bear holding his daughter in his lap, as they sat in a rocking chair. They were 'reading' Goldilocks and the Three Bears. A sales clerk picked it up. "Isn't it lovely?" She asked. "I love the song it plays." She wound up the key on the bottom. The song "Only You", came out in soft chimes. Nat's eyes suddenly filled with tears. She stood, silently watching, as the bears turned around inside the globe, stirring up the translucent 'snow', while the song played softly. "Miss? Are you all right?" The sales clerk asked, concerned. Nat nodded, pulling a tissue from her purse. "Yes. I'm sorry. It' just, my dad used to sing me to sleep with that song, when I was a little girl. It brought back a lot of memories." Nat wiped at her eyes. "I miss him, so much." Nat whispered. The sales clerk nodded in quiet understanding. "Would you like to purchase it?" Nat shook her head. "Not right now, thank you." She took a deep breath, then turned to look at Nick. "Ready?" She asked him, all traces of her tears gone. Nick signed the credit card slip, then picked up the box. "Yes." He followed Nat down the flight of steps, to the mall's main exit. "I hope Jenny likes her Birthday present." Nick said to Nat. Nat smiled at him. "I know she will, Nick." They left the mall and headed to the home of the Schanke's. *A few weeks later, Nat went to the loft for a video date. She was surprised to see the soft lighting and wondered what was up. Walking into the living room, she spotted a brightly wrapped, square box sitting on the coffee table. Frowning in curiosity, Nat looked at the box. "Hi, Nat!" Nick said, as he descended the stairs. "I see you've found it. Open it up." He moved to stand by her. Nat looked surprised, then puzzled. "For me? What is it?" She asked. "Open it up, and see." Nick said, motioning towards the gift. Nat tore the paper off of the box, then popped open the lid. She pulled two pieces of styrofoam out of the box, noticing how heavy they were. "Nick, what in the world...?" Nick grinned at her. "Open it, Nat." Nat pulled the two pieces apart, and gasped. "Oh, Nick." She whispered. Inside, lay the snowglobe she had seen at the department store a few weeks ago. She lovingly examined every detail of the piece, then wound up the key on the bottom. Closing her eyes, she began to softly hum with the music, tears slipping down her cheeks. Nick pulled her to her feet, dancing her around the room. He placed his cheek next to hers, singing softly. "Only you, can make this world seem bright. Only you, can make the darkness light. Only you, and you alone, can thrill me like you do. And fill my heart with love, for only you. Only you, can make this change in me. For it's true, you are my destiny. When I hold your hand, I understand, the magic that you do. You're my dream come true, my one and only you." As the tune ended, Nick halted their steps. He looked into Nat's eyes, bright with tears. "Thank you, Nick. I didn't realize how much I missed Daddy, until I heard that song, again." She wiped at her eyes. Nick kissed her on the forehead. "You're welcome, Nat." He looked into her eyes for a few moments, the words unsaid, but the feelings there. Nat understood. Now, this song meant even more to her. "So, what are we watching, tonight?" She asked, suddenly. The moment was gone, the spell broken. "How about, 'Ghost'?" Nick asked her. "What's that about?" Nat asked. He turned to head for the kitchen, grinning to himself. He loved the way these movies made Nat cry, because she always turned to him, for comfort. "You'll see." He said to her. Nat sat down on the sofa, snuggling up to Nick, when he joined her. She picked up the snowglobe again, then looked up at the sky. "I love you, Daddy." She whispered. Nick hugged her lightly. Then, they settled in, to watch their movie. >END This story is lovingly dedicated to my friend, Krissy, who was killed a few weeks ago. I'll miss you, kiddo. Questions? Comments?
