Love Bites by KnightCrusader 2005 It was late spring in Ontario and seventeen year old Jenny Schanke had spring fever. She had been studying for her final exams at school. What she really wanted to do now was cut loose for the weekend with her friends. Maybe go up to her parents cottage. The phone rang on Captain Don Schanke's desk at the 96th Precinct. He had taken the promotion in 1998 after Nick resigned. He figured without his partner he would be safer and Myra happier with him behind a desk. He picked up on the third ring. "Schanke." "Hi Daddy! How goes it today?" "Hi Pumpkin." Schanke's face lit up at the sound of his daughter's voice. "Everything's fine. How goes the studying?" "Great! I think I'll do ok on my finals next week. I can't wait for Graduation. All this excitement is making me crazy." You could almost feel Jenny's nervous energy. "The reason for my call is I'd like to ask you if Deb, Judy, Michele, Patty, and I can go to the cottage this weekend? Please? I'm sure Mom won't mind." "I'll talk to your mother when I get home. But I don't think it will be a problem." Schanke said with a smile in his voice. "Who's going to drive? Do I need to see about renting a car for you?" He didn't trust Jenny and her friends driving in Myra's old car. "Well..." Jenny wasn't sure how Don would take her next question. "I was going to ask Uncle Nick if I could borrow the Caddy." She said sheepishly. "WHAT?" Did he hear her right? Borrow *the* Caddy? He really didn't think Nick would let her, but Nick did have a hard time denying Jenny anything. "I don't know Jen. Why don't you let me get a car for you?" "Aw, Daddy! It would be sooo cool to take it. You know, top down, wind in my hair. This is my last carefree weekend. I want it to be special. Please let me ask him?" "How about I run it by Mom? Then if she says OK, you can ask Nick. Deal?" "Deal. Love you Daddy. Hasta," "La bye-bye. Love you too." Schanke hung up the phone. He couldn't believe his little girl was getting ready to graduate from High School. It seemed like only yesterday that she was seven. Now here she was seventeen. And wanting to borrow his partner's car! 'Myra will love this.' Schanke cleared his desk and grabbed his coat. Closing the office door he headed out of the precinct. Later that afternoon ~ "Oh! Thank you, thank you!" Jenny danced around the family room when her mom gave her the go ahead for her weekend trip. "I'm going to call Uncle Nick right now." Jenny shouted as she bounded up the stairs. The phone rang at Nick's house in Cambridge. It was early, four PM, and Nick was just waking up. "This is Nick. You know the drill." "Hi Uncle Nick! It's Jenny. Are you home?" Smiling, Nick picked up the phone. "Hi Sweetheart. I'm always home for you. What's going on at the Schanke household?" "Not a lot. Mom's going to a 'Skin Pretty' party tonight. Dad's home watching TV. And I have been studying my pea-brain off! Finals are next week. As a reward for all of my hard work, I decided to take this weekend off and go to the cottage. I'm taking my girlfriends with me." Jenny was excited but Nick could tell there was something she was dying to ask. He just didn't know what. "Jen, what's really up? I can tell there is something on your mind." "Well..." Jenny's voice took on a nervous tone. "I was wondering...if I could borrow the car for the trip. I know it's a huge favor, but I thought it would be really cool." She waited, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew Nick could hear it, which made her even more anxious. Nick chuckled to himself at her anxiety. Yes it was a 'huge favor', but he could deny her nothing. Jenny was as close to a daughter as he would ever get, so he spoiled her. Within reason of course! "Yes, you can have the car." Nick told her. Squeals of delight came from Jenny. "Thanks Uncle Nick! I'll be real careful. I'll even wash it before I bring it back." "OK Jen. I'll bring it to you on Thursday night. That way you can get an early start to your weekend. See you later." "Thursday. I'll tell Mom. Love you. Bye" "I love you too Jenny. Bye." End Part 01/10 Love Bites See disclaimers in first post: Part 02/10 Thursday morning Nick arranged for the Caddy to be picked up so that it could be waxed and detailed for Jenny's trip. It was returned late that afternoon. Once the sun went down Nick headed out for the hour long drive to Schanke's house. Don was sitting on the porch when Nick pulled up into the driveway. "Howdy, Partner." It had been four years since Nick had resigned but 'partner' had stayed a term of endearment. Especially since Schanke found out about Nick's being a Vampire. He poured Nick a glass, then returned to his customary Moosehead. "Hey, Schank. Thanks." Nick took the offered drink. He had returned to drinking donated human after he left the Force. "What's new here besides Jenny growing up too fast?" "Not a lot. Myra's been busy with the Grad party plans. It should be some shindig. She and Nat have been planning for what seems like months." At the sound of Natalie's name Nick snapped his head up. "Nat? She's helping to plan Jen's party?" Nick was caught off guard. It should not have surprised him. Just because Natalie had decided that she could no longer wait for Nick to admit what everyone else knew, was no reason to expect her to cut her ties with Don and Myra. Over the years she grew as close to the family as Nick had. *Flashback* Spring 1998~ the loft "I can't go on like this Nick. You running hot and cold. I never know where I stand with you." Nat pinched the bridge of her nose. She was tired. Emotionally and physically. It had been the week from Hell at the morgue. The day shift ME was out sick and the work was starting to pile up. To make matters worse Nick had decided to pull away. "You know where you stand with me Nat. I love you more than I have any right to." Nick looked right into Nat's soul. "*You* have all the right to love me. But I can't wait anymore. Time is moving on for me. I need to make some serious changes in my life, and right now I don't think you would give me what I want most." Natalie walked over to the table where her coat and purse lay. Picking up her keys she turned to Nick. "I will always love you." As a single tear rolled off her cheek she turned and walked into the lift and out of Nick's life. Nick handed in his resignation that night. Nat never saw him again. *End Flashback* "How has she been Schank?" Nick's voice was touched with sadness. "Fine I guess." Don sighed. He really didn't want to be having this conversation. "She still lives in town. But after you pulled your 'disappearing act' she quit the ME's office. She's been teaching at the university." "Is she happy?" Staring into the crimson liquid, Nick took a sip of his drink. "I mean really?" "She is now." 'Man oh man I don't want to tell him this.' Schanke shook his head and let out a huge sigh. "She started dating one of the associate professors about six months ago. Myra says he's a nice enough guy. I've only met him once. If you ask me, and you didn't, I think she's trying to find some one like you." "What makes you think she would want any one even remotely like me?" Nick sighed in despair. "Well I don't know, my thick headed partner." Don said sarcastically tapping the side of his head. "Lets see... tall, blonde, blue eyes, Belgian, speaks French, and teaches at night. Hummm, who does that sound like?" This was all news to Nick. He didn't know what to say or do. "I gotta go Schank. Kiss Jen and Myra for me. Tell them I'm sorry I can't stay. I'll pick the car up when ever Jenny gets home." With that Nick took to the air. Flying was the only thing that seemed to calm him at times like this. He flew for what seemed like hours. His only thoughts were of Nat. His Natalie. He never should have let her go. *Flashback* November 1995 "We both have to take this slowly." Nat tried to warn herself as much as Nick. Nick searched Nat's eyes for something familiar. "'We'. What do you mean by 'we'? Do we have a relationship?" His mind didn't remember but his heart and soul did. "No. No, we're just friends." The sadness filled her words. Nick reached up to caress her face, "You know, when I first saw you at the hospital, I knew there was something special between us." He kissed her tenderly, "Something very good." "It's hard to explain really. We have a unique relationship." Every fiber of Nat's being was giving in to the pleasure of Nick's kiss. "But you won't tell me why?" Nick's voice pleading. "I don't know if I should." Kissing her with all his pent up feelings Nick asked, "Is it important?" Ignoring her inner voice telling her they should stop, breathless, she replied, "No. Not now..." Nick took her into his arms and carried her to his bed. They make love for the first of many times that morning. It would be the only time they had. And with Nick's perfect Vampire memory it would have to hold him for eternity. *End Flashback* Nick found himself at the warehouse. He let himself in the sky light. He had kept it, in the hopes that someday he and Nat would come back. The loft was empty, like his heart, but he could still feel her here. It was why he had come. He could also feel the sun rising. "Great." Nick said to the air. 'Now I guess, I get to sit here and think about all the things I should have done.' The day passed slowly. As soon as the sun set Nick called Schanke. "Hey Partner, I need a huge favor." "What ever I can do for you Nicky boy!" "Could you please bring me something to eat? And maybe give me a ride home?" "Sure. Where are you?" Schanke had a feeling he knew where his best friend had spent the day. "The loft. I went flying after I left you and ended up here. I hope Myra isn't too mad at me for leaving in such a rush." Nick said running his hand through his unruly curls. "Nah, Myra's fine with it. She was a little steamed at me though for spilling the beans about Nat." Schanke replied sheepishly. "I'll be there in about half an hour." "Thanks Schank. You're the best." "I know." End Part 02/10 Love Bites See disclaimers in first post: Part 03/10 It was after Nick left Toronto that LaCroix came to see him. They had finally come to an understanding. The agreement over Fleur was released on the condition that Nick return to human, and the Community. The ancient bargain no longer suited LaCroix' purposes. Nicholas had agreed to his fathers terms. And LaCroix agreed to let Nicholas lead his own life. At least for now. After 800 years, father and son were finally at peace. The next three days were spent with Nick brooding over all of the time he wasted. Time he could have spent loving the only woman that mattered. 'How could I have let this go on so long?' The truth was he didn't really realize it *had* been so long. Four years was no time at all to Nick, but to Natalie, a lot can happen in that time. Would she be willing to see Nick after so much time? Would she still love him? He had to find out. Monday night Nick was sure to feed well. This was hopefully, going to be a long night. He would pick up the Caddy from Schanke and drive over to the university. He would try to catch Nat after she finished her last class. Nick arrived at Schanke's a little after sunset. Don, Myra and Jenny were just finishing dinner. "Cutting it a little close aren't we?" asked Don from the kitchen. "Just a bit." Nick chuckled. "Say, what's with the good mood? I haven't seen you this happy in a loong time." Kissing Myra on the cheek, he said "I haven't been." Sitting down next to Jenny, Nick replied, "I'm going to the university. It's about time that I tell Nat what she deserves to hear. That I love her. I always will. I was an ass to let her walk out of the loft four years ago. I was an even bigger ass to let it go this long." "No argument here!" Schanke scoffed. "I don't know Nick," Myra said with doubt. "Do you think she'd really want to see you after this much time?" "I don't know either, Myra. I have to try, and I won't know until I do." "What if she refuses? I can't bear the thought of either one of you getting hurt again." Myra said placing her hand on Nick's arm. "If she refuses, then I'll just have to try harder. I will not go on without her any longer. I've made up my mind. There's no changing it. If she won't come back, then I'll go to Europe and greet my first sunrise." Myra uttered an audible gasp as Nick rose to leave. He hugged Jenny. "Don't worry. I'll be fine." With his boyish grin he turned and left. Nick drove over to the university and parked the Caddy in an out of the way spot. He didn't want to risk Nat seeing the car before she saw him. He sat patiently waiting for her class to let out. He noticed Jenny's CD case sitting on the front seat. Nick picked it up and flipped through it. She had a wide variety of music. One CD caught Nick's eye, Vault by Def Leppard. He seemed to remember Nat liking this band. He reached for the remote for the CD player. Just as he was going to load it someone caught his eye. It was Nat. She was as beautiful now as she was then. Nick's heart beat twice. When Natalie walked out of her classroom she could have sworn she felt someone watching her. She looked out into the parking lot, and thought she saw a familiar car. "Get a grip Lambert!" 'You only think you see his car. Besides, what would Nick be doing here anyway?' Nat scolded herself. "You know what they say about people who talk to themselves?" Michel said as he walked up and put his arms around Natalie. "Is everything alright, my sweet?" Nick started to get out of the car when he saw a man approach. 'Schank was right.' The resemblance was unnerving. He could hear her familiar heartbeat, it quickened when the man approached her. It was the same cadence that he used to cause. "Yes, everything's fine. Just a feeling. It'll pass." Natalie sank into his embrace. It was so all encompassing and safe in Michel's arms. No worries of anyone or anything coming between them. So much like Nick, yet so different. She knew in her heart that this was only second best. But, when she walked out all those years ago, she truly believed that Nick would come for her. Did he still think of her? Did he still care? 'This is totally unfair to Michel' Nat thought to herself. 'Why dredge up ancient history? What do you hope to accomplish?' Shaking her head she removed herself from his embrace. "Can we go home? I really just want to be inside tonight." Nat looked up into his deep blue eyes. "Anything for you. I'll make us a nice light dinner. Maybe watch a movie. How would you like that?" Michel placed a loving kiss on her forehead, and led her to his car. After Michel's car pulled out of the lot, Nick started up the Caddy and drove towards the lake. He liked to go there at this time of year. It was still too cool for anyone to be there after dark. He parked at Cherry Street. Turning off the lights and lowering the top, Nick settled in for some quiet time. The water lapping on the shore was a balm to his soul. He really wasn't ready for what he saw. What was he expecting? Nat to be pining away for him? "Not hardly." Nick said to the black water. Across town ~ "I'm going to grab a quick shower, then I'll start dinner." Michel told Nat as he placed the bag of groceries on the counter. "OK Sweetheart. I'll pick out something to watch." Nat called after him as he retreated down the hall. After picking out a comedy to watch with dinner, Nat was feeling restless. The feeling of being watched was still with her. She opened the French doors and stepped out onto the balcony. Rolling a glass of Merlot between her hands, Natalie leaned down on the railing. She thought she was finally getting a grip on her feelings for Nick. Now this, whatever it was... "Oh Nick," she said to the night air "Why? Why were we both so stupid and stubborn?" A single tear escaped her eye, then another. Wiping them away Natalie thought she couldn't cry anymore tears for them. She was wrong. As she stood there just breathing in the clean spring air, an arm snaked around her waist, startling her. "What has you so far away Nat?" Michel smelled of fresh soap and shampoo. Just before she turned in his arms a lone car drove past on the street below. It was a Turquoise 61 Caddy and Nat stiffened in Michel's arms. She wasn't imagining things. There was only one car like that in Toronto. Was it coincidence or Fate? "Nothing. Old news." "It must be some pretty important stuff to have you so distracted. I thought you were going to drop your glass when that car went by." "It just reminded me of someone I used to know." Natalie sighed, "I'm really not hungry anymore. I think I'm just going to call it a night. I hope you don't mind." "No mon chere. I don't mind. Let me clean up and I'll be right in." End 03/10 Love Bites See disclaimers in first post: Part 04/10 Driving home from the lake Nick thought he heard Natalie's heartbeat. Shaking his head, 'Just wishful thinking.' Absently he picked up the remote again. Loading the CD, he pushed play. Music filled the car as Joe Elliot started to sing, "Love me like a bomb, I'm hot," As the song "Pour Some Sugar On Me" played Nick thought to himself, 'Not my normal taste but it does have a good driving beat. And since I've got over an hour drive, what the hell.' Suddenly he could see Nat dancing at a club in her carefree days. The image brought a smile to his face. 'Little Miss Innocent. Yeah right.' Halfway through "Photograph" he really started to like what he was hearing. He had managed some how to miss out on the New Wave movement of the 80's. He guessed what was old was new again by Jenny's choice. The opening strains of "Love Bites" came on, If you've got love in your sights Watch out, love bites When you make love, do you look in the mirror? Who do you think of, does he look like me? Do you tell lies and say that it's forever? Do you think twice, or just touch 'n' see? Ooh babe ooh yeah That was exactly how he was feeling. Nick had to pull off the side of the road. How could a song written ten years ago feel like it was written just for him right now? When you're alone, do you let go? Are you wild 'n' willin' or is it just for show? Ooh c'mon I don't wanna touch you too much baby Cos making love to you might drive me crazy I know you think that love is the way you make it So I don't wanna be there when you decide to break it No! The more he listened the more the song fit. Love bites, love bleeds It's bringin' me to my knees Love lives, love dies It's no surprise Love begs, love pleads It's what I need It was what he needed. And Nick didn't care what he had to do to get it back. When I'm with you are you somewhere else? Am I gettin' thru or do you please yourself? When you wake up will you walk out? It can't be love if you throw it about Ooh babe I don't wanna touch you too much baby Cos making love to you might drive me crazy Love bites, love bleeds It's bringin' me to my knees Love lives, love dies It's no surprise Love begs, love pleads It's what I need As the song ended Nick pulled the Caddy back onto the road and turned the CD off. Now all he had to do was try and get Natalie back. It was a good thing he had fed well. The stress of the evening's events really tested his control. This was not how he had planned for it to come out. Seeing Natalie in an other man's arms was one of the hardest things he had ever had to witness. It was an image that he longed to erase. When he got home he headed straight for the uncut blood he kept for emergencies. He drank his fill and headed to bed hoping sleep would overcome him. He lay there for hours, and when sleep finally did come he was tormented by dreams of Nat loving another. He awoke in a sweat to the sound of the phone ringing. Not fully conscious, he staggered down to the kitchen for his breakfast, letting the machine pick up. It was Schanke, "Hey, Nick! Where are you man? I'm starting to get worried. I've left like a million messages and you won't answer. If you don't call me in the next 30 minutes, I'm driving out there." Schanke was really wound up over something. Nick replayed his messages. "Hi Nick, Myra just got off the phone with Nat. She's real upset. Did you see her? Call me." "Nick, Myra just left to go calm Nat down. What did you do?" "Nick, it's Myra. I just got back from Natalie's. She is really upset. I think we need to talk." "Come on Partner, don't disappear on me. You're starting to scare me." "Its been two days man, call me..." He couldn't listen to any more. Each message more worried than the last. How long *had* he been out? He checked out on the porch for the Globe and Mail. Thursday. He had been out cold for almost three days! No wonder Schanke was getting a little paranoid. Nick figured he had about an hour before Don showed up. He thought it would be easier to see him face to face than to try and discuss this on the phone. While he waited for Schanke to arrive Nick showered and tried to look half way presentable. He dressed in black jeans and a burgundy sueded silk shirt. He also cleaned up the mess he had made in the kitchen. He was in a really bad way when he got home Monday night, blood and empty bags were strewn all over the counters, not to mention the empty bottles. Nick had no memory of coming home or what happened after he did. Fifteen minutes later there was a knock on the door. Nick went to open it. As he approached he heard two heartbeats, Don and Myra's. He wasn't expecting that. "Hi guys. I guess I'm in a little bit of hot water." "A *little*? Jeezus Nick, you scared the crap out of us!" Don scolded. "Where have you been anyway?" "Here. I guess I really needed to escape from what happened Monday night. I didn't even realize I had been out that long. Your last phone call is what woke me up. I'm really sorry for worrying you." Nick led them to the family room. He wanted everyone to be as comfortable as possible. He had a feeling this was going to take awhile. As he went into the kitchen he asked, "What can I get you Myra? I have Chardonnay or Jenny's diet soda." "A soda will be fine for now, but I may take you up on the wine later. Thanks." Nick returned with a Moosehead for Don, a Diet Pepsi for Myra and a glass of bloodwine for himself. He sat down in his favorite leather chair. Myra had never been out here and was studying the room. The carved mantle from the loft was here, as were the leather sofa and chairs. She noticed small framed pictures sitting around. Pictures of Jenny, of her and Don, and numerous ones of Nat. There was one that was larger than the rest. It was the one that Tracey had taken at the last Christmas party. It was a formal affair that year, held at Casa Loma, and Nat and Nick were both dressed to the nines. Tracey snapped them looking into each others eyes, totally oblivious of anyone else. She had it professionally framed and gave one to both of them. It was one if the most intimate photographs that Myra had ever seen. She remembered seeing the same one at Natalie's apartment, until recently, when she started dating Michel. The room had a very comforting feeling to it. If the conversation went like Myra feared it would, they all would need to be comforted. She hoped she was wrong. End Part 04/10 Love Bites See disclaimers in first post: Part 05/10 Nick could tell by the elevated heartbeats that Myra and Don were both nervous. "So, just how much trouble am I in?" Myra was the first to speak up. "You're not 'in trouble'. It's just that...well, Natalie thinks that she saw you Monday at school. She also saw you drive past her place. It was just so unexpected. It scared her a bit." "She did see me at school." Nick took a sudden interest in the carpet pattern. "I told you I was going. Well, when I saw her come out of class, I started to get out of the car. That's when I saw him. It took all I had to stay in the car and not rip him apart." "Man, I don't know if I could have done that if some shmuck had his paws on Myra" Schanke said whistling. "I never meant to scare her. I waited until they left, and then I drove over to Cherry Street Beach. I must have sat there for a couple of hours. Then I drove home." "She saw you drive past her building, I guess she thought you knew she was there." "I thought I heard her heartbeat." Nick said forlornly. Schanke noticed Nick slipping into one of his moods. Trying to get him back, he said, "Hey, don't sweat it Partner. I'm sure we can figure out a way around this." "I don't know Schank..." "I do." Myra said softly. "Nick, it's you she still loves. She told me. Even after all this time. She said if there were any chance that it was you she saw, that she would end it with Michel. I just wanted to make sure before I told her anything." Myra reached over and took Nick's hand. "Tell me what to do Nick." Nick kissed the back of her hand, "Nothing, you have already done more than I could have ever asked." "I'm glad. I think I'll have that glass of wine now." Myra said with a relieved sigh. The next two hours were spent with Nick listening to Myra tell him what Natalie had said to her over the last few days. With each revelation of how Nat still felt and how much she wanted him, Nick could feel the ache in his soul ease. Don and Myra left, feeling better than they had in a week, Schanke promising to help in any way he could. Nick kissed Myra on the cheek. As she walked to the car, Nick stopped Schanke. "Do me a favor?" "Didn't I just promise to help you? Whatever you need." "I need you to make some arrangements for me. I'm going to Belgium for a few days. Can you get reservations at 360 and arrange for a car to pick up Nat at school on say...Wednesday?" "That's it?" Schanke narrowed his eyes at Nick. "For now." Schanke started to walk to where Myra was waiting. "Oh, and Schank?" "Yeah?" "Make sure you get the whole restaurant." Nick added as he tossed Schanke his Platinum card. "Sure thing, Nick. See ya when you get home." Don got in the car and drove away. "What was that about Donnie?" Myra asked. "Nick wants me to reserve 360 *and* get Nat there on Wednesday." Don chuckled. He didn't know what his partner had planned, but he was sure it would be perfect. Especially with his wife's help. When the Schanke's had left Nick went in to start his plan moving. First he called to make sure that The Foundation's jet was available. Next he called the Raven to arrange for supplies to be brought to the airport. After his calls he went to pack. As Nick was packing he realized that Jenny's Graduation was also next week. A smile crept over his face. If everything went like he wanted, then he and Nat would arrive at Jenny's school together. End Part 05/10 Love Bites See disclaimers in first post: Part 06/10 Nick arrived at the airport in Brussels just past 3 AM. A car picked him up and drove him to the Klooster Hotel in Louvain, where he retired for the day. Upon rising Sunday night, Nick headed to his ancestral home in the hills outside of Louvain. He had been buying back the land for the past 100 years. After he left the last time in 1229, the land holdings went to Fleur, and from her to Andre. After Andre found out about Nicholas, Nick never went back, until the mid 19th century. By then the land had been sold off to numerous people. Now every time someone would put a parcel on the market he would buy it. He had most of the original estate back. He also had the Manor house and all of the out buildings restored. When he arrived, the caretaker was very surprised to see him. He had heard many stories of the Canadian man who was a descendent of the original de Brabant family, but never met him. "Monsieur de Brabant, what a pleasure and honor to finally meet you," the caretaker said in his best English. "Thank you very much." Nick answered, "Unfortunately I will not be here long. I only came to retrieve some family heirlooms." "I am sorry to hear that monsieur. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance." With that the caretaker excused himself and left Nick alone in the large entry. Nick made his way to a small room off the main hall. The room housed the family archives and many antique books. He entered the room and went straight to the large fireplace. Next to the firebox was a ornately forged door. Nick opened it to reveal a tiny niche. Inside were some very old documents and a small wood box. The contents looked like they had not been disturbed in centuries. Nick was very glad to see that. He picked up the box, opened the lid and looked inside. He removed the contents and placed them into his pocket. Nick replaced the box, and set out to find the caretaker. After speaking with the caretaker Nick returned to the hotel to rest and wait for nightfall and the return flight to Toronto. While Nick was in Belgium, Schanke and Myra were very busy too. Jenny's party was less than a week away, and they also wanted to add a few surprises of their own to whatever Nick had planned. Myra phoned Restaurant 360 Saturday morning and got the whole place reserved for Wednesday night from 7 PM to 1 AM. She wasn't sure what time Nick wanted Nat to arrive, but she knew her last class let out at 7. Don was taking care of the transportation. He called in a favor or two and got the nicest white stretch limo Toronto had to offer. He then made sure to have it stocked for both Nat and Nick courtesy of the Raven. Everything was going as planned. He had one more call to make. Myra phoned Nat Monday afternoon. "Hi Nat! How are you doing?" "I'm OK Myra. Did you and Don ever find out for sure if that was Nick at school last week?" Natalie's heart was racing with the hope that it was. She had already told Michel that they couldn't continue to see each other. It was one of the most difficult things she ever had to do. After she did that she turned in her notice at the university that she would not be returning in the fall. She had no idea what she would do if this thing with Nick didn't work out. Hopefully she wouldn't have to. "That's what I'm calling about, Nat. After three days of Donnie nearly worrying to death, he dragged me out to Nick's to find out what was wrong. We had a very long and enlightening conversation. I'll let Nick tell you the details, but basically, yes he was at school to see you. He also saw Michel..." Myra let the connotation hang in the air. Natalie felt her heart rip apart at Myra's last comment. "Is he alright?" Worry and pain laced her words. "Yes. He is now. But like I said I'll let him fill you in." "You keep saying that Nick will tell me. Does this mean he will see me?" She asked, hope filling her. "Yes." Saying that one word gave Myra so much joy. "When?" "Wednesday." " Oh my, that doesn't give a girl much time." "What are you going to tell him Nat? What about Michel?" Myra had a million questions she wanted to ask, but stopped at two. "I have already told Michel that I cannot be with him any more. I felt terrible. I felt like I had been using him, which I guess I was. Sounds pretty bad doesn't it?" Nat let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for four years. "Not as bad as you think. At least you both came to your senses before the relationship with Michel got any more serious." "I don't think it ever would have Myra. I never did commit fully to him. I couldn't. Nick is the only man who really loved me for who I am. And the only one I ever truly loved. I think I always knew in my soul he and I would be together." This is the bubbly friend that Myra had missed. She was very glad that she was back. Monday afternoon found Don busy with his surprise for Nick and Nat. He had phone calls in to Toronto's largest florist. For all his brashness Donald G. Schanke was a true romantic at heart. His gift would be delivered to 360 at 6:30 PM Wednesday. Natalie met Myra and Jenny at the mall late Monday afternoon, for an evening of shopping and general 'girl stuff'. She helped Jenny pick out her dress for the Graduation ceremony, and another for the after party. The three women went to a small cafe for dinner. Jenny excused her self afterwards and went to meet her friends. Nat and Myra continued to shop for the perfect dress for her meeting with Nick. Nat had no idea what was planned for Wednesday, and Myra was being very uncooperative. Myra did tell Nat that she would be picked up from school, and taken to dinner. Just not where. They were rapidly running out of options, when they found it. The dress was a deep emerald green sheath, sleeveless with a deep vee neckline. Saying good-bye to Myra and promising to call, Natalie went home. She hung her new dress on a hook, and headed to the bath. While Nat lay soaking, Nick was on his way back across the Atlantic. Every thought on seeing Natalie in less than 48 hours. Nick took out the items that he returned home for. Gifts for the most important women in his life. For Nat, if she would accept it, his mothers wedding ring. Something he had never given any other woman. Not even Alyssa. For Jenny, he would give her Fleur's delicate gold earrings. End Part 06/10 Love Bites See disclaimers in first post: Part 07/10 Nick's jet landed at Pearson. There was a car waiting to take him home. Thankfully the car's windows were totally blacked out, so no sunlight entered the interior. By the time Nick got home he was exhausted. He stopped by the kitchen to grab some bloodwine and headed upstairs to a quick shower and then bed. The hot water relaxed Nick. As he dried off and slipped into black silk pajamas, the quick trip to Europe caught up with him. He fell asleep the moment he laid his head on the pillow. He dreamed of Nat, and of the life he was going to offer her. Nat awoke Tuesday afternoon feeling better than she had in a long time. She didn't know if it was the wonderful evening she had with Myra and Jenny, or the upcoming date she had with Nick. 'Probably both.' Nat thought to her self. She got up and started to get ready for her class tonight. As she was getting ready to leave, there was a buzz on the condo's intercom. "Yes?" "Miss Natalie Lambert?" asked the voice. "That's me.." Nat replied. "I have a delivery." "Come on up." Nat buzzed the lock open. A couple of minutes later there was a knock on her door. Reaching for her purse to retrieve a tip, Natalie opened the door. The messenger handed her an envelope. She thanked him and handed him the tip. Closing the door, she wondered who had sent her a letter. There was only an address from the issuing Fed-Ex office, and it was local. Knitting her eyebrows together Nat ripped open the mailer. Out slid a cream colored parchment envelope. Nat knew immediately it was from Nick. She held it up to her nose, smelling his familiar scent. Her head swam with memories. Carefully she opened the envelope. "Natalie, Where do I begin. I was a fool not to come for you when you walked out of my life. You were right. I wasn't ready to give you what you wanted. I wasn't ready to damn you to my hellish existence. You made me see that I wasn't damned, but I saw it too late. You had already gone. For this I am truly sorry. I have wasted four years. Years that I could have spent loving you. Please let me try to make up for those lost years. Nick" Nat read and reread the note. Looking in the mailer, she could find nothing indicating where or when he would be picking her up tomorrow. She didn't have time to worry about it now, she was late for class. With that she hurried out the door. She arrived at the university just before class started. Luckily for her, her students would be testing today and tomorrow so she didn't have to worry about having to concentrate on lessons. When she entered her classroom she went to her desk. There on her blotter was a single red rose with a card tied to it. She picked it up. It read simply: '24 hours.' Could she stand it? Wednesday Afternoon~ Schanke called to check on the car for Nat and his surprise. Both were perfect. He didn't know who was more nervous Nick or Myra. She had been pacing for over an hour, and it was only 5 PM. "Are you going to call Nick?" Myra asked. "What for?" Don shot back, his nerves were a bit jangled too. "I'm sure he's just as nervous as we are. Man, oh man, I hope this comes off OK." "I'm sure it will. We just have to be patient. One of them will call us." Cambridge~ Nick was coming down the stairs when he heard the car pull up out front. He picked his long coat up off the back of the chair. Checking his pocket for his mother's ring he took a last look around the house. Everything was perfect. The driver knocked on the door. Nick settled in for the drive into Toronto. He should arrive at 360 at about 6:45 PM. He needed to be there to oversee any last minute arrangements. Nat was getting ready for class. She put on the new dress she and Myra bought on Monday. Taking extra care with her make-up and hair, she could touch up at school before Nick arrived. She was so nervous! It felt like she had a entire marching band in her stomach. Knowing that she would not need her car she called a cab. Class went smoothly and before she knew it, it was 7 o'clock. As Nick rode the elevator up to the restaurant, he looked at his watch. It was the one Nat had given him not long after they met. He was right on time. The elevator stopped and he was greeted by the maitre'd. "Welcome, Mr. deBrabant. I hope everything is to your liking. Mr. Schanke was very helpful." The man gestured with his arm for Nick to look over the setting. "I also received the delivery from the Raven." Schanke thought of everything! Nick could not believe what he saw. Don had every available table covered in the most exquisite floral arrangements he had ever seen. All of Natalie's favorite flowers were here. Roses in the deepest red, orchids, gardenias. The air was heady with the exotic scents. The standard dining table had been replaced with a crescent shaped banquette. The table looking out onto the Toronto skyline. "If you will excuse me I need to see to the preparations in the kitchen. I have sent the elevator down to wait for Miss Lambert." Bowing slightly the man left. Nick was alone in the restaurant. He walked over to the bar and opened a bottle of bloodwine. Pouring himself a glass, he walked over to the window to wait for Nat. Class let out at 7:15. This would be her last class, and it made her a little sad. She really had enjoyed teaching. Maybe she would again someday. She gathered up her things. Four years in this classroom and everything that she wanted to take fit in a small tote bag. It amazed her how little she really needed to take with her. She touched up her make-up, and tried to tame her hair. At 7:30 on the dot a white limo pulled up in front of her building. This wasn't what she was expecting. Where was Nick? Maybe in the car. The driver opened the door and helped her into the backseat. Now Nat was really confused. She asked the driver, "Is there any message for me?" "No ma'am. I'm just instructed where to take you." "And that is...?" The driver wouldn't answer her. End Part 07/10 Love Bites See disclaimers in first post Part 08/10 The limo headed south on Spadina towards the lake. The Tower was getting closer. Nat's heart raced with anticipation. She and Nick had been to 360 before. On one of the anniversaries of their meeting-- Nat's birthday. 'Why didn't I think of this before!' Nat thought to herself. Rolling her eyes, she felt silly for not guessing sooner. The car pulled up to the curb, and a young man came from the Tower lobby. He opened the door for her, and extended his hand. "Miss Lambert?" Nat nodded, "I will escort you to the elevator." "Thank you." They walked the short distance to the base of the CN Tower. The young man led her to an elevator that would take her straight to the restaurant 'Straight to Nick' she thought. He led her inside, set the control, and left her alone in the car. Nat was thinking that this was rather unusual. But as the car ascended, Nat had other things to think about. She fidgeted with her dress and tried to keep her knees from giving way. About half way up Nick could hear her heartbeat. Even from this distance. It helped that there was no-one else except the small staff, in the Tower. His own heart beat twice in anticipation of his Nat stepping off the car and into his life. He continued to look out onto the dark sky. For the first time since that night at Azure, Nick was afraid. Afraid Nat wouldn't want him. Afraid she would, and that he would take too much. The sound of the elevator doors sliding open pulled Nick from his thoughts. He gripped the rail at the window and closed his eyes. Taking a deep breath, he waited. "Nick?" Her voice washed over him. He turned to face her. Letting out the breath he was holding, "I'm here Nat." Natalie turned to the sound of his voice and it was as if four years had never separated them. Of course Nick looked the same. His hair was a little longer but, otherwise nothing had changed. She immediately felt self-conscious. Would he still desire her? She was after all older now and had aged slightly. Nick stepped closer to her. Both unsure of the other. "I've been waiting for you," Nick said as he moved closer. "I wasn't sure you'd come." Natalie stepped into Nick's arms. It felt so right. He embraced her like he would never let her go. Inhaling his familiar cologne, Nat replied, "Of course I would come. I have wanted to come to you for a long time." "Why didn't you?" "I wasn't sure you'd let me." Nick placed his finger under Nat's chin and raised her head up. He placed the gentlest of kisses on her lips. "I'd let you." he whispered, his voice deep and husky with emotion. They remained like this for several moments when Nat pulled back slightly, already missing the security of his embrace. Swallowing hard, Nat gathered her wits. Looking deep into Nick's eyes she could see she had made the right choice. "It is so good to see you. I have missed you." Nat said, her eyes shining. Reacting to his jealousy of last week, Nick asked, "You have? I seem to remember seeing you leave class with a man. Is it over?" Once the words were out Nick regretted them. Nat did not deserve this. This was supposed to be a night of beginnings and here he was letting his oh so Mortal jealousy get the better of him. Nat couldn't believe what she was hearing. Was he actually accusing her of not waiting for him? She would not react. She deserved this. She knew from Myra and Don that Nick pretty much withdrew from everything and everyone when she walked out. Swallowing her anger at the accusation, Nat answered him. "Yes I have. I told him last week, after I thought I saw you, that it was over." Natalie felt she may as well get it all out in the open now. "I have already resigned from the University, and have given notice on my apartment. What happens now depends on you." Nick didn't know what to say. After so much time and she still was ready to give it all up for him. His heart soared. "Nat, I am so sorry for accusing you. I never should have doubted you." He kissed her forehead. "Yes you should have. I tried to make it without you. I buried my self in my work, tried to move on. But I couldn't. I tried to leave Toronto, but found that impossible as long as you were here. I even managed to find a look-a-like for you. Nothing worked. You were all I ever wanted." Tears were slowly rolling down Nat's cheeks. Dammit! She didn't want to cry! Nick wiped them away with his thumbs as he caressed her face. "Come on. Let's sit down." He lead Nat to the elegantly set table, "Schanke went to so much trouble for this to be perfect lets not waste it." "Don did this?" Nat asked incredulously. "Yeah, he did. Even I wasn't privy to it." Nick helped Nat to sit on the banquette. "All I asked him to do was make sure we had the place to ourselves." "It's beautiful." "Not nearly as beautiful as you." As if on cue the maitre'd appeared, "Would you like to order now?" "Yes, I think so." They ordered their dinners. Nat was happy that Nick was going to at least attempt to eat something. Once the maitre'd left Nick rose and walked over to the bar. He needed some reinforcement for the rest of the evening. Nat saw him pour a glass from the Raven's private stock. He also poured Nat a glass of Chardonnay. When Nick returned to the table Nat had to ask about his choice of beverage. She didn't know about him going back on human, or the agreement Nick had with his sire. "I see you've switched brands." Nat said hoping she didn't sound disappointed. She accepted the glass from Nick. As he went to sit down he started to fill her in on a few new details. "The night you walked out of the loft I resigned from Metro. But I guess you already knew that." Nick said with a chuckle. "I closed up the loft about a week later. It was just too painful to stay there. I stayed at the club for a few days while I found a new place to live." Taking a sip from his glass he looked to Nat for approval to continue. "I ended up in a beautiful house in Cambridge. I guess I was there about a month when LaCroix came to see me. He and I had a very long discussion. To make a long story short, I agreed to go back on human, donated only. To return to the Community and take my rightful place as an Elder and as his son. He in turn agreed to leave you alone, and to release me from our agreement about Fleur." He look at Nat, hoping to see acceptance. Natalie didn't know what to say. She was shocked at the thought of Nick back on human blood. Did this mean he had given up on his quest? There had to be a catch. LaCroix was not known for his benevolence. "So what does this mean for us?" Nat asked with confusion. "Have you given up on becoming Mortal? The cure?" Nick didn't know how to tell her without hurting her. So he just told her the truth, and let the chips fall where they may. He wasn't expecting the answer he got. "I have given up the search for mortality Nat. Only because *you* gave it back to me. My humanity, my morality, my faith. I had morality and mortality being one and the same. They're not, and you said it yourself, I am the most mortal man you know. It took me along time to believe it." Nick took both of Nat's hands in his "The only thing this means for us is that now, I am able to give you what I hope you still want." Natalie's heart raced with the meaning of his words. Did she still want the gift of immortality? Did she want to spend Eternity with Nick? She had asked herself these questions hundreds of times the last week and a half. The answer was always the same. Yes. "I never stopped loving you Nat," Nick still holding her hand, stepped around the table to kneel in front of her, "and I never will." Reaching into his pocket and opening Nat's hand, he placed a kiss in her palm. As he pulled back he placed his mother's ring there. Nat looked at the very old yet beautiful ring. It was a plain gold band with a cabochon set garnet. "Will you honor me and my family by becoming my bride?" Tears welled up in Natalie's eyes. She didn't know what to say. 'Yes' just did not seem to be enough. She looked up at Nick just as one tear slid down her face. She nodded her head, because she couldn't say a word, the joy radiating from her eyes. Nick took the ring and placed it on her finger. He turned the stone to the inside as this was the custom then. Nat looked puzzled. Nick explained, "It was customary to wear the stone inside, especially at Court. It was like a secret between lovers. My mother always said it was like holding my fathers heart. I did that because that is what you do Nat, you hold my heart. And I hope you will hold it forever." By now Nat found her voice. "I would be the one "honored" to be your bride." She cupped Nick's face in her hands. She kissed face, finally claiming his lips. What followed was a searing kiss with both of their tongues dueling for dominance. Nat pulled Nick closer to her. With the intimate contact of their bodies passions long ignored were ignited. Nick pulled Nat to a standing position in order to get closer to her. He held her and cherished her. Yet he still couldn't get close enough. "God, Nat I have missed you." He breathed into her ear, setting her even more on fire. "You won't ever have to miss me again." Wanting to continue this in a more private setting Nick started to lead Nat to the elevator. He pulled out his cell phone. The car would be there directly. On the ride down Nat looked out at the glittering lights of Toronto. This would be her last night as a Mortal. And she knew deep down in her soul that this was right. They waited briefly for the car to arrive. The drive to Cambridge took almost an hour. With the late hour there was no traffic. On the way Nick refused to let Nat go. He held her hand or wrapped her in his embrace. All the while wanting desperately to make love to her. But not here. He would wait. This night was to be the beginning of an eternity of nights they would spend together. He wanted to be perfect for her. Unlike before when he didn't remember. This time there would be nothing in the way. End Part 08/10 Love Bites See disclaimers in first post Part 09/10 As the car approached Nick's house Natalie was deep in her own thoughts. She was absolutely sure this is what she wanted. But her own insecurities made her wonder if this is what Nick really wanted. His voice brought her back to the present. "We're home Nat." 'Home', she liked the sound of that. Exiting the car Nick held out his hand for her. Natalie stepped out into a fragrant yard. "This is beautiful Nick. I didn't know you liked flowers." "Just the ones that smell like you." Nick nuzzled Nat's neck, "I had these planted because they remind me of you." Natalie blushed. "Shall we go inside?" Nick still holding her hand led her up to the front of the house. Reaching the door, Nick picked Nat up. Startled at the feeling of her feet leaving the ground, but feeling secure in Nick's arms, Nat giggled, "What are you doing?" "What does it look like?" Nick's voice sounded jubilant, "I'm carrying you over the threshold!" "Isn't that supposed to come 'after' the wedding?" "Technically, yes." They entered the house. Nick set Nat back down on her feet. "I'll be right back." He disappeared into what Nat guessed was the kitchen. While she waited, she looked around. She recognized a lot of things from the loft. She also noticed the many photographs sitting around. She didn't remember Nick doing that at the loft. Upon closer examination she noticed that quite a few were of her, or her and Nick. She also noticed pictures of Don and Myra, and of Jenny. "They keep me grounded." Nick's words startled Nat. "Sorry. I thought you might like a glass of wine." He handed the glass to Natalie. "Thanks. I didn't mean to jump. I guess I was spacing off." She lovingly ran her hand across the top of the frame she had been holding. "I thought I cornered the market on that." They sat down on the sofa, Nat wrapped securely in Nick's embrace. They talked for hours. It was as if they had never parted. As the sun started it's daily ascent Nick helped Nat up. Taking her face in his hands, he began to slowly reacquaint himself with every part of her face. Ending at her full lips. Nick licked Nat's lower lip and wordlessly asked for entrance to her warm mouth. She let him in. A soft sigh escaped her as Nick's kiss grew deeper and more intense. Arms wrapped around Nat, he pulled her closer. She could feel Nick's arousal, and she wished there were fewer layers of clothes between them. Breaking the kiss, Nat ran her hands up Nick's chest and began to unbutton the silk. As the shirt slowly came open Nat began kissing the exposed flesh, sending electricity up Nick's spine. She lightly raked her nails over his hypersensitive flesh. Teasing his nipples, she then began nipping and kissing her way lower. Pulling Nick's shirt free of his pants, she let it fall to the floor. Before Natalie could go any further, Nick stopped her. Drawing her body back up his, he snaked one arm around her waist. With the other he deftly undid the zipper of her dress, and her bra. They joined Nick's shirt on the floor. She was now clad only in a pair of lacy panties and her shoes. Nat suddenly felt self conscious under Nick's intense gaze. She started to cover herself. Nick stopped her. "Don't ever feel like you have to hide from me." Holding her arms out Nick continued to caress Natalie with his eyes. "You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in all of my 800 years." Clasping her hands with his, Nick drew her to him and wrapped her arms around his neck. "Let me show you how beautiful you are to me." Natalie was speechless. She nodded her consent. Nick led her up the stairs and to his bed. End Part 09/10 Love Bites See disclaimers in first post Part 10/10 "I have waited too long for this Natalie." Kissing her throat, down to the beginning rise of her breasts, "Forgive me?" "There is nothing to forgive." Nat's breathing was becoming rapid. Trailing to the nub that was Nat's nipple, Nick traced his tongue around it, causing it to harden even more. Nat felt her legs turn to jelly. If it weren't for Nick holding her, she was sure she'd fall. Latching on to Nat's breast, Nick lowered her to the bed. There he continues his assault on her breasts. Giving equal attention to each. The swell of arousal rising in Natalie's stomach. Moving lower Nick removed her panties exposing her patch of wiry curls. He began to lightly stroke her mound and part her delicate folds. Nick could smell the sweet nectar that was Nat's blood mixed with the scent of her arousal. How he wanted to taste it! He first put one finger into her then another and began to draw out her sweetness. He began a slow deep massage of her sex. Nat bringing her hips up to meet him. Nick then lowered his head and tasted all that was his. Gently sucking on her engorged nub with the same rhythm as his fingers, Nick brought Nat to the edge of orgasm. He withdrew his fingers, causing Nat to moan in frustration. He was fully aroused now. Looking up at Nat, his eyes flecked with gold, he needed to see if she would accept all of him. Her eyes were closed, and her hands clutching at the sheets. "Natalie..." Nick's voice rough, "Look at me. This is what I am." She opened her eyes and looked right into the face of the Vampire. But this was also the man she loved more than life itself. "I know." She reached down to caress his face. Nick, seeing the acceptance he so desperately needed, lowered his mouth to Nat's most secret place and helped her off the cliff. As the wave of release washed over her, Natalie felt as if she would never recover. As the tide ebbed, Nick raised up on his knees before her, relishing the feeling of being the cause of her pleasure. He was ready to claim what was his. What would be his for Eternity. He reached for Nat's hands and pulled her to him. Kissing her hard she could taste herself on his lips. She ran her tongue over his sharp canine and released her blood into his mouth. The unexpected taste of Natalie's blood was almost more than Nick could take. Reaching between them he again plunged his fingers deep into her. She was wet and hot. Natalie moaned as she again climbed that steep cliff. But she would not fall, not this time. This time it was Nat who would give the gift of climax to Nick. She blazed a trail down his body. Licking the blood sweat from him. Nick's breathing was becoming fast and erratic. She finally reached what she wanted. Taking his swollen cock into her hand, she began to slowly pump her fist up and down. She ran her tongue up the full length of him. Pulling his foreskin back she took all of him into her mouth. As she sucked she could feel Nick throbbing in her mouth. She knew he was close. She sucked harder and gently ran her teeth up his shaft. "No Nat...I need to come in you." Natalie licked the pre-cum from him, and he laid her beneath him. Nat raised her hips up to Nick so he could penetrate her better and deeper. He entered her with as much tenderness as he could. He was rewarded with the most intimate caress. She was tight and he could feel every inch of her. He sheathed himself fully into her. Then he began to move. Slowly at first. Slightly gyrating in her, to feel all of her. Nat tried to increase his pace by wrapping her legs around his hips and grinding into him. Nick took the hint. He began to thrust hard and deep into her. Faster with every stroke. Both of them yearning for the world to explode. Nick reared back, bared his fangs and struck. Everything he was and everything he wanted surged into Nat. She was overwhelmed briefly by all the images. Then she was bathed in his love for her. She returned it with her unending love for him, and it washed over him and let him know he would never again feel alone. The physical world ceased to exist. There was only the two of them. The slowing of Natalie's heart brought Nick back. He withdrew his fangs from her, but was still joined to her. He opened the vein in his wrist, sucking gently to start the flow. He placed it over Nat's mouth. After what seemed like hours, but was really only moments, Nat began to suckle. This was the beginning of many lifetimes they would have. Eternity some how didn't seem long enough. The next night Nick decided to end Schanke's suffering. He dialed the station knowing he would be there. "Captain Schanke here." "Got any plans the weekend following Jenny's party?" asked a very happy Nick. "I don't know, what do you have in mind oh partner of mine?" "Well, ya see...I kinda need a best man." "Holy smokes! She said yes??" "Yes I did Schank. Tell Myra will you?" Natalie spoke into the phone, then hung it up. KnightCrusader 2005
