Cook Farewell letter by: Emily Dickinson The clouds rolled in dark and dreary. Rainfall fell heavily upon the city. Thunder crashed as the lightening lit up the dark sky. One bolt was bright enough that we could see LaCroix sitting at his desk at the radio station. He slowly reached over, switched the microphone on, and quietly spoke to everyone who was listening. "The Night Crawler has returned to the night. Behold, what is this, a letter. A poem to share; My, my, and no name. This soul seems very lost and alone. What thoughts appear in your mind from this?" As LaCroix continued with his show of lost souls, we quietly floated into Nick's home where he was snuggled up to Molly in bed. Warm glowing smiles shined when suddenly his alarm sounded off. He stretched over and turned it off then rolled back towards Molly. He gently touched her soft cheek then she awoke to his loving face, and they greeted each other with a passionate kiss. "Morning," Nick replied. "Morning; you all right?" Molly queried. "Oh yeah. May I ask you something?" Nick inquired. "Anything," Molly said. "Did you know about Paul and Carla?" Nick asked. "Yes. Why?" Molly queried. Nick inhaled, "How do you feel about it?" "It's all right for some, but not everyone." Molly answered. "True. How do you feel about it?" Nick inquired. "I think it's great if both persons involved want it." Molly answered. "Molly, would you consider it, with me?" Nick asked. "Are you sure?" Molly questioned. Nick smiled, "Definitely." "May I think about it?" Molly inquired. "Sure. Oh gosh, I am late. Time to shower." Nick said. "I will race you." Molly replied, smiling. "Ready, set…" Nick started. "Go." Molly replied. Molly jumped from the bed and beat Nick to the bathroom. Nick turned the water on then they helped each other undress and slowly stepped into the shower and savored the intense heat of the water. They took full advantage of the atmosphere around them and made love in the shower. As they enjoyed the shower Paul knocked upon the door, no answer. He entered the loft, and heard the shower. He waltzed into the kitchen to prepare a hot pot of coffee. He reached up into the cabinet grabbing hold of two mugs, and made his cup of coffee then left one out for Nick. Paul strolled into the living room and sat upon the couch then turned on the television for some news and waited patiently for Nick. Upstairs in Nick's room, they were getting dressed when Molly inhaled the warm aroma of something familiar. She then looked to Nick. They both inhaled once again. It was the warm aroma of hot coffee brewing. Nick knew who it was. "Paul's here." Nick said. "Paul?" Molly queried. "He has a key to get in." Nick told her. Molly, slightly hesitant, "I see." "I have a key to his place. Being partner's it's required." Nick explained. "I understand." Molly replied. "Don't worry, he always knocks first." Nick said, smiling. "Good," Molly said, exhaling. "Why?" Nick asked. "What if we were in front of the fireplace?" Molly inquired. "He would learn a lot to show Carla." Nick said, smirking. "Funny," Molly replied. "Sorry. Come on, let's go." Nick said. Nick took her by the hand strolling out of the bedroom into the hallway and down the stairs into living room. They greeted Paul then Molly walked off to make coffee for Nick and her. "Hey," Nick said. "Hey buddy, what's up?" Paul inquired. "No calls yet," Nick replied. "Hi, Molly," Paul said warmly. "How are you?" Molly asked. "Great," Paul answered. "Glad to hear it. How's Carla?" Molly inquired. "She's away visiting her mother." Paul told her. "You lonely yet?" Nick queried. "Oh yeah, but I have you guys." Paul answered. "True," Nick jumped in. "Here's your coffee, and breakfast in ten." Molly said. "Thanks, Love," Nick said, smiling. "You're welcome." Molly replied. "Let's go." Nick suggested. Paul exhaled, "Cool." They moved over to the table, and sat down. Nick helped Molly set the table. They placed the food out and enjoyed their coffee with a very nice hot meal. **************** Meanwhile on the other side of the city at the Dobler Mental Hospital, a nurse was doing her usual bed check. She knocked on the door twice then entered the room. It was too dark so she leaned over and turned the light on. The room was completely neat. She moved over to the table picked up the phone and dialed for the doctor to come quickly. A few moments passed and a woman wearing a white doctor's jacket came running into the room. She slowly walked around, but when the nurse closed the door, and they saw pictures of the famous Night Crawler. "Dr. Willard, should we notify the police?" The nurse asked. "Not yet Lynne. Let us call the mother first. It could be harmless." "Let us hope so. Kristi should not be left alone." Lynne said. "Remove a picture for her file, and lock the door then follow me." Doctor Willard requested. "Yes Doctor." Lynne said. Lynne very carefully removed a picture from the back of the door, and locked the door on her way out. She followed Doctor Willard to her office. Looking up her mother's phone number she began to dial. Lynne placed the picture upon her desk. *********************** Back at Nick's loft, they finished eating breakfast then Nick followed Molly to help her in the kitchen. Paul discreetly tapped his watch to show Nick it was time to check in at the station. "Molly, we need to go. Do you need a ride?" Nick asked. "My car is next to yours. But I need to go home for clean clothes first." Molly replied. "Think about what we discussed earlier." Nick requested. "I will, I promise." Molly said, smiling. "Love you. Thanks for a perfect morning." Nick replied, warmly. "Same here; love you, too," Molly said. Nick placed a warm kiss upon her moist ruby red lips then followed Paul through the door into the elevator, and down to his car. Nick unlocked the doors and then they climbed in. As Nick was about to start the engine, Paul quickly reached over and grabbed hold of his arm to draw his attention. "Think about what?" Paul asked. "What?" Nick queried. "That's what you said to Molly; think about what?" Paul questioned. "Oh that, about us living together." Nick told him. Paul, shocked, "Whoa. I never thought you were the type." "I didn't think so either, but…" Nick said. "And?" Paul inquired. "She wants to think about it." Nick told him. "Awesome. Tell me when it happens." Paul replied. "I will. Let's go, we're late." Nick said. "Lead on." Paul replied. Nick started the engine and backed out of his spot then slowly drove to the station. He noticed a free spot along the left side of the building and carefully drove into it. He turned the engine off and they climbed out then he locked the doors. They ran up the stairs and inside of the building then walked over to his desk. They slowly sat down while Nick warmed up his computer. As they were about to begin their day, they saw Reese waving them into his direction. They stood up walking towards him, and entered the office. Reese closed the door behind them, and moved over behind his desk sitting down in his chair. "These are Detectives Coletti and Knight. Mrs. Sheldon, please tell them what you just told me." "I'm Diane Sheldon and my daughter Kristi and ex-husband Vincent are missing." "Missing," Paul replied. "My daughter, Kristi, is a patient at the Dobler Mental Hospital. My ex-husband molested her when she was ten or so. The trauma caused her to go into a Manic Depression. A short time ago, the hospital, Doctor Willard called me and asked me if Kristi was with me, she wasn't. Then the front desk told her an older gentleman took her out and never returned." Diane explained. "Do you have any pictures of them?" Nick asked. "Yeah; here." Diane said, handing them a picture. "Is she suicidal?" Paul asked. "Possibly. She is on medication for her condition, Lithium. She could reflect back if she misses any of it." Diane told them. "Can we have the addresses of you and your ex-husband?" Nick asked. "Well, here's mine, but I have no clue about his." Diane explained. "We will find it. Anything else we should know." Paul inquired. "Please find her, fast." Diane pleaded. "We will do our best." Paul said. "Thanks, Diane; we will be in touch." Reese said. "Thank you. I will be at home." Diane told them. "Good," Reese replied. Diane quietly left the office and then the building. Nick and Paul also left the office and returned to Nick's desk. Nick entered the ex-husbands name to begin a search for his residence. Nick grabbed a file with some papers. Suddenly the computer displayed the information he needed plus a few odd surprises. "Hey, look at this. Vincent Sheldon, fifty-two years old, unemployed, arrested twice for rape of two minors and the incest case Diane mentioned." Nick said, quoting to him. "Bad Dude," Paul replied. Nick exhaled, "True," "Any addresses?" Paul asked. "Last known address is over by the docks, the apartment complex number 154." Nick told him. Paul sighed, "The slums." "What?" Nick inquired. "That's what everybody calls it." Paul told him. "Okay, make a list. Dobler first, then his place, and save Diane's for last." Nick suggested. "Why her place?" Paul asked. "Kristi's room is there, and you never know." Nick answered. "True," Paul replied. "Here, add this print out to the file and let's get going." Nick said, eagerly. Paul smiled, "Lead on." Paul placed the papers safely into the file following Nick out of the building and to his car. Nick unlocked the doors, they climbed in, and he started the engine. He carefully backed out and quickly headed for the Dobler Mental Hospital. Paul pointed out the entranceway to Nick. He carefully drove in, found an empty spot and parked the car. He turned the engine off and they climbed out then followed the path that led to the front door. Paul opened the door and strolled in with Nick close behind. They quietly approached the front desk. "Yes, may I help you?" she asked. "Detective Coletti; I'm Detective Knight; may we speak with a Doctor Willard?" Nick asked. "One moment please," she requested. While they were waiting, they observed their surroundings. The receptionist called Doctor Willard, and moved over to the desk to inform them. "She will be with you in a moment." She explained. "Thank you." Paul said politely. They slowly moved away from the desk to wait for her. After about twenty minutes or so, a woman Doctor appeared and stood by Paul's left side. "Excuse me, I am Doctor Emily Willard. You are?" Emily inquired. "Detective Paul Coletti." Paul said. "Detective Nick Knight." Nick added. "How can I help you?" Emily asked. "Is there a place where we can talk, privately?" Nick inquired. "It's nice outside, so far, let us go out there." Emily suggested. Paul and Nick escorted the Doctor outside. It was a sunny and warm day with a cool breeze to take the edge off the heat. They sat down upon a bench just outside the door. "What seems to be the problem?" Emily asked. "Diane Sheldon came to us. Kristi; her daughter Kristi, and her ex-husband Vincent missing." Nick briefed her. "She said Kristi was a patient here." Paul added. "She's been here about eight years." Emily replied. "Why?" Paul questioned. "Her father brutally molested her when she was about ten. Her mother tried to help her for two years, but couldn't so she had Kristi committed." Emily explained. "What was the diagnosis?" Paul asked. "Post-manic Depression with suicidal tendencies," Emily told them. "What was her course of treatment?" Nick inquired. "We started with group sessions also one-on-one sessions with me. I prescribed Lithium to take the edge off." Emily said. "How was she doing with that?" Paul inquired. "It took us a few to find the right dose, but once we found it plus the sessions, she was doing very well." Emily replied. "Did she ever go home?" Nick asked. "On weekends and her mother would visit twice a week." Emily answered. "The father?" Paul queried. "They got a divorce, and he went to prison for about five years, but sadly, he got out about six months ago." Emily told them. "Has he tried to see her?" Nick questioned. "He's not allowed in or on the hospital grounds, but apparently…" Emily said. "May we see her room? It might help us find her." Nick requested. "Follow me." Emily complied. "Thank you." Paul said. They stood up and followed Doctor Willard back into the hospital. She led them to the elevator and they rode up to the sixth floor. They stepped off and followed her down the corridor to Kristi's room. Emily unlocked the door slowly pushing it open and they carefully passed by her. She quietly stood in the doorway and watched them closely search the room. Paul went to one side while Nick took the other. They closely examined everything in sight and beyond. Paul slowly turned around and moved the door slightly to look in the corner. He saw all the pictures of LaCroix hanging there. He whistled softly then waved Nick in his direction. Nick was slightly shocked by the view, but not surprised. "Great admirer of your cousin." Paul hinted. "They also have a tendency to create a fantasy relationship on a famous person while there in the depressed phase." Emily said. "She chose my cousin." Nick replied. "Apparently," Emily sighed. Paul exhaled, "Good choice." Nick slowly walked back over to his side of the room where he noticed a few white pills lying on the floor. He carefully picked one up and showed it to Doctor Willard for her to identify. "What's this?" Nick asked. "Lithium, damn," Emily answered. "What does it mean?" Paul questioned. "If she had stopped taking her medication, she could be very dangerous." Emily expressed concerned. "Great," Nick replied. "Capable of Murder?" Paul queried. "Possibly, but mostly she'd hurt herself." Emily told them. "Let's go. Thank you Doctor. We will be in touch." Nick said. They left the room leaving everything undisturbed. They walked down the hall to the elevator and rode it down then walked outside. Paul with Nick at his side strolled over to the car and Nick unlocked the doors. They climbed in, but Nick hesitated while he searched for his keys. "What's up?" Paul asked. "This will be a very tricky case." Nick responded. "How so?" Paul inquired. "Hide and seek. She's hiding and we're it." Nick replied. "I hate that game." Paul said, sighing. "Well, start liking it. She started it but we have to win." Nick told him. "True; where to now?" Paul inquired. "Mr. Sheldon's place," Nick said. "Let's roll." Paul suggested. Nick had found his keys starting the engine and carefully backed out then drove out of the parking lot. He quickly drove to the other side of the city by the docks. He saw a spot directly to the right of the building pulling up along side and parked the caddy. They climbed out and he locked the doors. They walked through the front door and down the hall to the last apartment on the right side. Paul slowly placed his hand upon his gun and Nick leaned up against the wall away from the door. Paul lightly knocked on the door and loudly announced his presence, but no response. Paul gently touched the knob and suddenly, the door became jarred. Nick slowly pulled out his gun and gave each other a silent signal of ready. Nick placed his hand upon the door while Paul prepared to jump around to the front of the doorway. When he jumped with his gun drawn directly in front of him, he saw there was no one in sight. He slowly walked into the room and looked around with Nick very close behind. They hung their guns down at their sides and each searched a side of the apartment, but there were papers and clothes everywhere. Nick reached into his pocket pulling out his cell phone, and called it into Reese for back up. Suddenly, Paul opened a nearby closet door and surprised by the view. He waved Nick over to his direction. "Nick, more pictures of your cousin, and personal ones," Paul said. "What? How personal?" Nick inquired. Paul clearing his throat, "Almost naked," "He won't like that." Nick said, exhaling. "Do you want them?" Paul asked. "For evidence, yes; Paul, got a hanky on you?" Nick inquired. "Yeah, here," Paul said. "Look at this; a pen with a possible stain on it." Nick said, showing it to him. Paul gasped, "Whoa," "Keep looking. Oh, it sounds like the crew is here." Nick said. "I will bring them in." Paul told him. "Okay. Here, give that to Kathy to bag up." Nick requested. "Cool." Paul said. Paul left Nick behind to continue the search of the apartment. Paul quickly returned a few moments later with Reese and Kathy close behind him. The lab crew stood in the doorway waiting for the word to begin. Reese slowly approached Nick in the middle of the apartment's living room. "Well?" Reese inquired. "She's with her father. Two possibilities come to mind." Nick said. "They are?" Reese queried. "One is dead or both are." Nick replied. "Great," Reese sighed, frustrated. "It seems she has set her eyes upon Nick's cousin." Paul added in. "What?" Reese asked. "Most manic-depressive people set a fantasy on someone famous. My cousin owns and runs a radio station." Nick told him. "Oh, man. What's next on the list?" Reese questioned. "Diane's home; Kristi has a room there. It might help us find her." Paul suggested. "Keep me posted." Reese said. "Yes, sir," Nick replied. Nick and Paul carefully stepped out of the room and moved into the hallway. They walked outside to his car. He searched for the keys, but saw Paul staring into the file. "What's up?" Nick asked. "Not sure," Paul replied, hesitating. Nick inhaled, "No secrets." "Maybe your cousin can help us lore her into the open before something really bad happens." Paul suggested. "We can ask him tonight. It's dinner night, but Allen is sick with the Flu and Michael's still on his trip." Nick said. "Damn," Paul said, disappointed. "Next time." Nick replied. "Lead on to the next place." Paul suggested. Nick turned the key and unlocked the doors. They climbed in and he started the engine. As he was backing up his cell phone rang. He placed the car in park and removed his cell phone from his coat pocket. "Knight," Nick answered. "Ebourn," Molly replied. "What's up?" Nick asked, grinning. "Need a rosy-red wine for dinner." Molly requested. "Rosy-red wine got it." Nick said. "Love you." Molly replied. "Love you, too." Nick said, smiling. "Molly?" Paul queried. "Yeah. Write it down, rosy-red wine." Nick told him. "Got it." Paul replied, smirking. Nick carefully pulled away and drove the roads that led to Diane's home. Paul read the file and quietly gave him the directions. Nick saw the road ahead, slowly turned and drove to Diane's residence. He pulled into the driveway and turned the engine off. Paul tossed the file into the backseat. They walked up the path to the front door. Paul rang the doorbell and waited patiently for Diane. Suddenly, Diane appeared at the door and quickly opened it for them. As they entered the home, they stood in the doorway. After she had closed the door, she approached them then stood very still but feeling slightly nervous. "Did you find her?" Diane asked. "Not yet, but we will." Paul said strongly. "You're ex-husband is definitely missing." Paul said. "You were at his place?" Diane queried. "Yes…." Paul started. "And nothing. We were hoping to search her room." Nick replied. "Please do. Nothing was touched, but I will wait here." Diane told them. "Thank you." Nick replied. Diane pointed out her room down the hall. Nick led the way with Paul at his side. Nick gently turned the doorknob and carefully opened the door while Paul observed every step made. The room appeared untouched, just as she left it. Paul moved to one side and Nick moved to the other. Paul came across her closet. He cautiously opened the door and what he saw gave him a slight jolt to his nerves. He quickly whistled to draw Nick to his direction. The closet walls had pictures of LaCroix's face. In a small corner of the closet, there was a wooden box with his picture and a small black candle sitting upon a silver metal plate. Nick searched through the dresser drawers and found a piece of paper with two names written on it with phone numbers. He held onto it while he continued with the search. He glanced along the side of the dresser and saw a trashcan. He looked inside, and found her medical bracelet from the hospital and an empty medication box marked morphine. He pulled out his hanky from his back pocket and carefully picked them up for a closer look. Paul noticed him and quickly moved into his direction. "What you got?" Paul asked. "Two names with numbers, and an empty morphine box. Wait, also an empty bag of needles." Nick told him. "The closet is a shrine to LaCroix. Pictures of his face next to a black candle, the whole nine yards." Paul explained. "Let's go. We'll drop these off, pick up the wine, and have a nice cozy dinner at my place with the ladies." Nick suggested. "Cool." Paul agreed. They carefully exited the room and closed the door on the way out. They walked down the hall and to Diane who was sitting at the table in the kitchen. They quietly approached her with what they had found. "Anything?" Diane asked, shaking. "Well, we found a paper with two names and numbers written on it. Do you know them?" Paul asked. "Let's see. Dale was her closest girlfriend and Chuck; she dated him twice before she went into the hospital." Diane told them. "Thanks." Paul said. "Do you know if she was using morphine?" Nick inquired. "No, she's highly allergic to it, and so is my ex-husband." Diane said. "Thank you." Paul said. "Why?" Diane asked. "Uhm---well, we found an empty box in her room." Nick told her. Diane gasped, "Dear, God," "Don't worry, we will find her." Paul assured her. "Thank you." Nick said. Nick and Paul quietly left her home and walked outside to Nick's car. He unlocked the doors and they climbed in. He started the engine backing out of the driveway, and headed for the Forensics building. Nick pulled up along the curb and put the car in park. Paul stepped out and ran inside to the lab. He gave the evidence to Kathy to test and ran back out to the car. He climbed in and Nick pulled away heading for the liquor store. Nick parked out front while Paul ran in and bought a very nice bottle of a rosy-red wine. He ran back out and got into the car. Nick backed away driving to his place, and parked the car for the night. They rode up in the elevator to Nick's loft. When they entered the living room and the door closed automatically behind, Molly and Carla were on the couch sipping hot coffee. They saw them walking across the room and they stood up to greet them from a long day. Nick handed the wine to Molly after she kissed him very passionately. Nick walked upstairs to his bedroom and into the bathroom for a few moments. He washed his hands and returned downstairs to Molly and his friends. Paul went and did the same as Nick. When Paul returned they sat down around the table and enjoyed a very warm but cozy dinner. *********************** However, at the Cerk Radio Station, LaCroix was not all warm and cozy. He had just sat down to begin his show when someone entered and handed him a letter addressed to him personally. Upon examination of the letter, he noticed it was similar to the first. He quietly leaned over and flipped the switch to speak to Toronto. "It appears the Night Crawler has picked up a fan. A letter has arrived. Let us see what it holds: My, my Kristi, everyone has stress, feeling lonely and depressed lives. Death is not the answer. Tell you what, Kristi; call me so we may discuss this personally. Call me at 555-9013. The Night Crawler is waiting for you, Kristi." LaCroix replied. A moment or two passed very quietly. LaCroix looked over and noticed the red light flashing upon the phone. He nervously reached over and slowly picked up the receiver then placed it gently upon his ear. "You have reached the Night Crawler." LaCroix announced. "It's Kristi." Kristi whispered. "Hello, Kristi; where are you?" LaCroix asked. "No where." Kristi answered. "What I mean is; where are you calling from?" LaCroix inquired. Kristi hesitated, "I can't." "Why is that?" LaCroix questioned. "I made a mess. I tried; he would not listen; he would not stop. He…" Kristi rattled to him. LaCroix inhaled, "Kristi, what did you do?" "I stopped him. I made a mess." Kristi said, slightly upset. "Tell me where you are. Perhaps I can help you." LaCroix suggested. "No, no. I do not want you to hate me." Kristi pleaded. "Kristi, I could never hate you." LaCroix replied. Kristi exhaled, "Really?" "Really." LaCroix said, calmly. "I love you." Kristi said. "Kristi, Kristi. It seems she has left us, for now, but do call again Kristi. Let us listen to some soothing music to calm the beasts within." LaCroix said, hesitating. LaCroix stayed by the radio station hoping she would call back. While he waited, he read the letters again to see if there were any clues to where she was. He realized he had a serious situation on his hands and quite possibly the case Nick and Paul were trying to solve. He quickly picked up the receiver and dialed Nick at the police station knowing he would be there. *********************** Back at the station, Nick had just sat down and warmed up the computer when his phone rang. While Nick answered his phone, Paul filled the file with everything they had so far. "Knight," Nick answered. "Nicholas?" LaCroix inquired. "LaCroix, what's wrong? You never call me." Nick inquired. "That's true. Could you please come by the studio; I need to show you something." LaCroix requested. "On my way." Nick said. As Nick hung up the phone, Paul had finished entering the last clue then noticed Nick's face. He tapped him on his arm. "What is it?" Paul asked. "LaCroix, he has something to show me." Nick told him. "Cool. Hold on a minute." Paul requested. Paul quickly clicked the enter button and watched the computer do its search. It suddenly stopped with a screen full of information and Paul's eyes widened. He pointed directly at the monitor for Nick to see what he saw. "Damn, look at that." Paul requested. "Dale Truex, twenty-one years old, and Chuck Weeden, twenty- three years old; they're both students at the city college. Kristi was accepted two years ago, but never made it." Nick said. "Man," Paul sighed. "All right, let us see what LaCroix has then we will shoot over to the Dobler Hospital." Nick requested. Paul exhaled, "Lead on." Nick led the way out with Paul close behind him. They ran down the stairs to his car. Nick unlocked the doors, they climbed in, and Nick started the engine. He backed up then pulled out and headed for the Cerk Radio Station. When he saw the building, he parked along the curb and turned the engine off. They climbed out and Nick locked the doors and walked into the building. They rode the elevator up to the third floor, walked through a glass door, and saw LaCroix sitting in the chair in a daze. LaCroix sensed him then slowly handed the letter to Nick and Paul for them to read and examine. Nick slowly sat down in the chair by LaCroix. "I was wondering why you didn't come home the other night. These?" Nick inquired. "A few nights ago, I received this letter. I had assumed it was a fan, until this arrived last night. Shortly after its delivery, she called me." LaCroix told them. "She called?" Paul queried. Nick slowly opened the second letter, read it, and became amazed by the name signed upon it. "Kristi." Nick said. LaCroix exhaled, "Yes." "What did she say?" Nick asked. "She had made a mess and she tried to stop him. He would not so she stopped him. She did not want me to hate her. I don't know her, do I?" LaCroix inquired. "No. She is the girl Paul and I are searching for. I mentioned her in passing. Anyway, she suffers from Manic Depression from a past trauma." Nick explained. "I see." LaCroix replied. "Her father molested her. In that world, I guess, they choose someone to center around; usually someone famous." Paul told him. "Let me guess, she has chosen me." LaCroix said, exhaling. "It seems so. We may need your help to find her." Nick requested. "Sure. I feel like a trouble magnet." LaCroix said, smiling. "Good people do that. Don't worry, I'm here." Nick told him. LaCroix smiled, "Thank you." "Can you remember anything else?" Paul asked. "A familiar noise, but I don't recall it just yet." LaCroix answered. "If you receive another one…" Nick replied. "I will notify you." LaCroix told him. "Thanks." Nick said. LaCroix smiled, "My pleasure." Just as they were finishing up Nick's cell phone rang. He reached into his pocket pulled it out and cleared his throat. "Knight. All right, we are on our way. Thanks." Nick replied. Nick placed his phone back into his pocket then stood up and moved aside. "More trouble?" Paul asked. "Not sure, the hospital called." Nick said. "We were going there anyway." Paul said. "Thanks." Nick said, warmly. LaCroix exhaled, "Take care." "You too. See you at home." Nick said. "Night, Nicholas," LaCroix replied. "Night, let's roll." Nick replied in return. Nick gave LaCroix a slight hold upon his upper arm then left the studio and LaCroix alone. They walked through the glass door into the elevator and rode it down to the outside. They went over to his car and he unlocked the doors then climbed in. Nick started the engine and backed out. He drove to the Dobler Hospital. Nick noticed Paul was reading the file closely. "What are you reading?" Nick asked. "Well, I pulled out those addresses for Dale and Chuck and guess what?" Paul queried. "What?" Nick questioned. "Chuck Weeden has a record." Paul told him. "What?" Nick inquired, stunned. Paul exhaled, "Breaking and entering, stealing drugs." "Interesting," Nick replied, exhaling. "What else?" "I do not fully understand this Manic-Depression stuff but she's chosen LaCroix as her center safe place." Paul said. "The letter sounded like she's not all there." Nick replied. "She's suicidal. One letter sounded like she was hurt or killed someone." Paul expressed. "Her father, maybe; he did molest her." Nick suggested. "True. We'll ask the Doctor when we get there." Paul said. Nick smiled, "Cool." Nick quickly drove the highway and side streets that led to the hospital. Paul observed the hospital in the distance and quickly pointed it out to Nick and he carefully drove into the parking lot. Nick parked the caddy near the front entrance, turned the engine off and they climbed out. He locked the doors, and walked up the path and entered the building. ********************** They quietly approached the front desk and requested Doctor Willard's presence from the secretary. She moved over to her phone and called her. A few moments passed and Doctor Willard slowly entered from the far right hallway. They greeted each other with a warm friendly handshake and she escorted them down the hall to a small room. She quickly unlocked the door and directed their attention to a glass panel on a medicine cabinet that had been broken. Nick examined the door while Paul jotted a few notes into his notebook. "Someone broke in and stole a vile of morphine." Emily told them. "Did anyone dust it yet?" Nick asked. "Yes and no prints they think he or she wore gloves." Emily said. "Do you use cameras?" Paul inquired. "No. I have a key and so does Lynne, my nurse. But the lock was broken." Emily explained. "Any ideas?" Nick inquired. "None," Emily sighed. "Okay. We will file it later. We need to talk about Kristi and her mental state." Nick expressed urgently. "Let's go to my office." Emily suggested. Doctor Willard led the way from the medication room. Two doors down to the left they entered her office. She quickly closed the door and moved behind her desk. Paul left his notebook out to add to the notes he already had. "It seems that Kristi has chosen my cousin as her focus point. She has sent him two letters and has made one phone call so far." Nick told her. "It's begun. She has stopped taking her medicine." Emily said. "Is my cousin in danger?" Nick asked. "Not at this stage. As I explained before, Manic-Depression can develop in two ways, chemical, or trauma. Kristi was a childhood trauma brought on by her father. He brutally molested and raped her. He verbally abused her by telling her to tell no one or he would kill Mommy. She was helpless." Emily explained. "Oh, man." Paul whispered. "How did Diane find out?" Nick asked. "Sadly, she caught him in the act." Emily replied. "Poor kid," Paul said. "Your cousin, what's his name?" Emily inquired. "Lucien LaCroix, he's known as the Night Crawler on Cerk radio." Nick told her. "He's well known. She must have listened to him for a long time and has centered her fantasy on him. He must play along with her if we are to save her. One rejection will push her over the edge and she could take it out on him. Then he would be in great danger." Emily explained. "Suicide?" Paul inquired. "Murder/Suicide. She could kill him then kill herself. In her fantasy, he's hers, alone." Emily said. "I will tell him." Nick replied. "Keep me informed. I want to help her in every way possible." Emily told them. "Thanks, Doctor." Nick said. "Anytime; I have rounds to do. Can you find your way out?" Emily queried. "Sure. Thanks Doctor." Paul replied. They stood up, and politely shook hands. Nick and Paul quickly exited her office and strolled down the corridor. They walked through the front door down the path and over to his car. Nick unlocked the doors and they climbed in, but hesitated for a moment. Paul reached into the backseat grabbing the file and placed the report inside and tossed it back on the seat. "What that poor girl must have suffered." Nick said. "So true. You think we'll find her in time?" Paul asked. "I don't know." Nick replied. "Where to?" Paul asked. "Well, let's have a talk with Dale then home. I'm beat." Nick expressed stretching. "Same here; here's the address." Paul replied. "Great. Let's roll." Nick said. Nick started up the engine backing out of the parking space and drove out of the lot. He quickly headed for the address Paul had given him. They slowly roamed the side streets that led them across to Dale's home up in the Highlands. Nick spotted the house and carefully pulled into the circular driveway turning the engine off. When they climbed out Nick locked the doors and they walked up the path to the front door. Paul rang the doorbell and they waited patiently. Suddenly, a young woman with brown hair and eyes came to the door with a very sad face. She opened the door and looked at Paul. He glanced at Nick, and he approached the doorway and stood by Paul's side. "Hi. Are you Dale Truex?" Paul inquired. "Yes. Can I help you?" Dale asked. "I'm Detective Coletti; my partner Detective Knight; may we come in and talk to you?" Paul asked. "Why?" Dale inquired. "We need to talk to you about Kristi Sheldon." Nick informed her. "Sure. Come in." Dale replied. Dale slowly opened the door and moved aside as they entered the house. She closed the door cautiously behind them. Dale escorted them into the living room where her mother was sitting in a chair reading a book. A cushioned couch ran along the bay window with two side lamps with a fireplace off to the right side. "Mom, these are Detectives; my mother, Judy." Dale said. "Hello, Ma'am." Paul replied. "She's deaf." Dale told them. "Sorry. You were friends with Kristi." Nick questioned. "Yeah. We went to the same schools and we were to start college two years ago and study the stars and the environment." Dale briefed them. "What kind of person was she?" Nick asked. "She was very open, honest, and funny. Until about two years ago." Dale answered. "What happened?" Paul asked. "She never said. She became very quiet and withdrawn. She cried a lot." Dale said. "She never told you." Nick queried. "Not until later, after she went into the hospital. I was horrified." Dale explained. "I'm sure." Paul responded. "Is she all right?" Dale asked. "She's missing." Paul answered. "Ah, God; I have no idea where she would hide, but she did have this major crush on this radio person, the Night Crawler, I think. She also dated Chuck Weeden, twice before this disaster started." Dale told them. "Thanks." Paul said politely. "If she calls, I will let you know right away." Dale replied. "Here's my card. Call me there." Nick said. "All right. Let me know when you find her." Dale requested. "Sure. Again, thanks for your help." Paul said calmly. Dale politely escorted them to the front door. When they left, she closed the door behind them. They walked towards his car and he unlocked the doors. They climbed in and sat there quietly staring out the windshield then let out a long stressful sigh. "That poor girl. Her whole life completely ruined by that creep, her father." Paul hissed in anger. "I hear you. All right, its time to get some rest." Nick suggested. "My car is at your place." Paul told him. "Let's roll." Nick replied. Nick started the engine backing out of the driveway and slowly headed home. He pulled into his spot, they climbed out, and Nick locked the doors for the night. As they waved a friendly farewell to each other, Nick rode up in the elevator to his loft. When he entered the loft, the door closed automatically behind him. Nick tossed his jacket into the chair and placed his things upon the table next to the couch. He gently placed the safety switch on his gun then put it into the small drawer under the table. He stumbled up the stairs into his bedroom and strolled into the bathroom. A few moments passed and exited the bathroom wearing his nightclothes then placed his laundry into the hamper. Nick walked over to the edge of the bed pulled down the blankets and slowly sat down. He placed his watch onto his nightstand and set the alarm for the morning. He crawled under the covers and got all cozy and warm. He turned the light off and slowly drifted off to a deep sleep. As Nick drifted off his eyes ran rapid with the vision playing his mind. He felt as though he was looking through a window watching himself in a life that was familiar, and yet, it was not. He was walking through a grassy field with LaCroix by his side. They came across a camp sight in a clearing with a small fire, but no one was there. They stood close to the fire and took in the warmth of the fire to comfort themselves from a long journey. "Where is everyone?" Nick asked. "Not sure." LaCroix replied. "Why are we here?" Nick asked. "To see Mya." LaCroix answered. "Who is she?" Nick questioned. "A very wise woman of the mind." LaCroix replied. "Hello." Mya said softly. LaCroix exhaled, "Mya." "What is it that you seek?" Nick asked. "Safe Haven." LaCroix answered. "Why?" Mya inquired. "That's not your concern." LaCroix replied. "I see, and you? What is it that you seek?" Mya inquired of Nick. Nick exhaled, "I do not know." "You LaCroix may rest in the cave to the right, five hundred yards that way. But you, Nicholas, you will remain here for a moment." Mya requested. "Why?" Nick asked. "Come here." Mya suggested. Nick slowly turned to face her directly. LaCroix stood off to the side behind a tree unnoticed. Mya gently took him by the hands, and Nick closed his eyes as she placed a hand upon his chest. He suddenly opened his eyes and his vampire side appeared with the red fiery eyes and the fangs that shined from the moonlight and the glow of the fire. He turned his head away in shame, but Mya gasped at first, but she felt his pain from his endless struggle. "Nicholas de Brabant." Mya said. "How did you know my true name?" Nick asked. "You have been this vampire, this demon, for many centuries. You have fought and struggled through most of them. Someday soon, you will be redeemed." Mya told him. Nick gasped, "But…" "Have no fear, you're safe with me." Mya said. "Mya," Nick uttered. "Some one will look to you for guidance in their redemption. Do so, for he is truly kind but very confused." Mya explained. "Who?" Nick asked. "Someone you love and care for; your true companion." Mya answered. "Mya, Mya," Nick said. "What happened?" Mya asked. Mya hesitated and nearly fainted but Nick was able to catch her. LaCroix quickly flew in and helped Mya sit upon the blanket. He looked to the sky then showed Nick it was time to flee. Nick looked to Mya as she smiled and gently stroked his cheek. He left her to sleep while they flew to the cave for safety. ******************** While he was dreaming, LaCroix had arrived and heard Nick mumbling in his sleep. He stepped into his room and saw him fighting the images. LaCroix reached over to turn the light on and sat along the edge of the bed. He placed his hand upon his shoulder. He gave Nick a slight shake to wake him up. Nick quickly sat up sweaty and yelled the name Mya that frightened LaCroix slightly. LaCroix placed a hand upon his upper arm to secure him in comfort. "Nicholas?" LaCroix inquired. "LaCroix, what?" Nick asked, shaking. "You were dreaming." LaCroix told him. "It was too real. The realest one I have had yet." LaCroix exhaled, "What about?" "Who's Mya?" Nick asked, directly. "Mya?" LaCroix questioned. "Yes, Mya. Who is she? She knew us, but many years ago. Centuries she said." Nick replied. "What was it that she said to you?" LaCroix asked. "I saw myself with vampire eyes and fangs. She felt my pain and struggle to receive redemption. However, I would help another one receive redemption as well. Someone I love and care for." Nick told him. "I see." LaCroix sighed. "Enough. Tell me the truth. Was I this vampire?" Nick asked, slightly demanding. LaCroix hesitating, "Nicholas," Nick quickly rose from his bed and moved a few feet away from him. LaCroix stood up to face him. Nick looked directly into his eyes. "Answer me. Was I this vampire?" Nick insisted, knowing. Just as LaCroix, was about to respond to Nick's demand, Scott was in the doorway and observed them silently. LaCroix felt his presence and gave him a quick glance. Scott sensed the tension that filled the room but mostly Nick's body. "Answer me." Nick shouted. "All right; yes, you were a vampire once." LaCroix answered. Nick gasped, "God." "He returned to you what was taken." LaCroix said. "Are you?" Nick inquired. LaCroix exhaled, "Yes." "Are you my true cousin?" Nick questioned. "In this life, yes; but in the past, I am your father, as they say." LaCroix told him. "And Scott?" Nick queried. "Yes." Scott answered. "Tell me all of it." Nick insisted, pleading. "All right, but I must insist you tell no one. Not your friends, or Molly, it could destroy what we, but mainly, you have built here." LaCroix instructed. "I promise. Help me understand this." Nick pleaded. "Let's sit down and we will explain this the best way we can." LaCroix suggested. Nick exhaled, "Thank you." "Scott, join us. It all began in the year 1228…" LaCroix replied. ******************* While they sat upon Nick's bed to tell him of the long past, Kristi was sitting in a corner of a small room and had just finished writing a letter. She carefully placed a stamp on it and slowly walked out of the room to the mailbox just outside. She quickly returned to her room then the corner and sat down, and began to rock back and forth while humming to herself. Kristi reached down to her left side picking up a needle and gave herself a shot into her forearm. She dropped the needle and continued to rock. Off in a far corner of the room was a man lying on the floor not moving. However, you could hear the sound of flies buzzing around a huge puddle of dried blood and the body. Kristi just stared at the body while she rocked. ********************** As the sun was making its presence known, LaCroix placed a hand upon Nick's arm, and sighed quietly then waved to Scott for him to leave for a moment. Scott stood up exiting the room and waited for LaCroix in his. LaCroix quietly cleared his throat and looked to his eyes. "Nicholas, you must bury this deep into your mind. No one must know that you remembered. It could destroy my world, but mostly, yours." LaCroix insisted. "I will. Are you the one I am to guide?" Nick asked. "Perhaps," LaCroix replied, hesitating. "I will if you ask. It has to be your choice, of your own free will." Nick said. "I know. We will talk later. I need to rest. Have no fear of what you were, but rejoice on who you are now. Hold onto that and the future." LaCroix pleaded. "I will. Thank you." Nick replied, warmly. LaCroix smiled, "My pleasure." "Night, LaCroix." Nick said. "Night, Nicholas." LaCroix replied. LaCroix slowly stood up and strolled out of his bedroom. As he passed the doorway, he hesitated then peeked in on Nick and he appeared to be calm and more at ease with the truth. LaCroix grinned and moved into his room, and closed the door for him and Scott to rest. "LaCroix, you all right?" Scott asked. "I am not sure." LaCroix replied, confused. "You had to tell him, because she told him his future." Scott replied. LaCroix exhaled, "I gave him the past." "He handled it just fine, he's strong." Scott told him. "I just hope it won't change his destiny since he's human now." LaCroix said, concerned. "Molly, friends, and family," Scott said. "Yes, his job and…" LaCroix replied, pausing. Scott gasped, "The Enforcers, uh-oh." "Yes. We will have to watch him a lot closer now." LaCroix said. "True. Let's get some rest." Scott suggested. LaCroix and Scott prepared themselves for a long day's rest while Nick rose from his bed and strolled into the bathroom. A few moments passed then the shower ran. He carefully stepped inside and got clean and refreshed. After rinsing his golden hair, he turned the water off and stepped out. He stretched over and grabbed a towel then dried his entire body. He wrapped the towel completely around his waist. Nick walked back into his room and got dressed for work. As he walked out of his room to the staircase, he heard the door buzzer then Paul entered the loft. Nick walked down the stairs and met him in the kitchen. Paul leaned upon the counter while Nick made a hot pot of coffee. Paul noticed Nick seemed more quiet then usual. "You all right?" Paul asked. Nick exhaled, "Bad dream." "You want to talk about it?" Paul inquired. "No. I'm fine." Nick said. "Okay, but I am here if you want to talk about it." Paul told him. "Thanks." Nick whispered. "Where to first?" Paul asked. "I want to talk to Diane about the incest case." Nick said. "How's LaCroix holding up?" Paul inquired. "He'll call if he gets anymore." Nick answered. "Cool." Paul replied. "Here. Let's go." Nick suggested. Nick led the way out of the loft, and down the elevator and to his car. He unlocked the doors and they climbed in. Nick started the engine, carefully backed out, and slowly drove back to Diane's home. He rolled into the driveway and turned the engine off. They strolled up the path to the front door. Nick rang the doorbell and they waited patiently. Diane quickly appeared in the doorway all worn and tired. She opened the door to let them enter and they stood in the hallway. She slowly closed the door behind them and walked into the living room with Nick and Paul close by. "Are you all right Mrs. Sheldon?" Nick asked. "Last night about mid-night or so, I received a phone call from Kristi." Diane told them. "What did she say?" Paul asked. "She wanted me to know that she was okay, that she fixed the problem and she will be able to rest now." Diane replied, upset. "What problem?" Nick asked. "She didn't say, but she sounded very calm, and more relaxed." Diane said. "Diane, what kind of reaction does she have towards morphine?" Paul inquired. "First a rash, then a high fever and she could swell up and die from it if it's not caught in time." Diane told them. "Did you hear any familiar noises in the background?" Nick asked. "There were traffic noises and some kind of a bell like an alarm." Diane said. "Because of her father molesting her, do you think that was the problem she was referring to?" Paul queried. "Maybe, I don't know. Time is running out; we need to find her fast." Diane replied. "We will. Did she have any favorite places, things, etc.? Anything?" Nick inquired. "She loves trains." Diane answered. "Trains," Paul said. "Yeah," Diane whispered. Suddenly, Nick's cell phone rang so he quickly reached into his pant pocket and pulled it out then excused him self to answer it. "Knight," Nick replied. "Nicholas," LaCroix said. "What's up?" Nick asked. "I just received another letter." LaCroix told him. "On our way; read it and we will listen to it on the way there." Nick suggested. "All right," LaCroix answered. Nick quickly hung up and placed the phone back into his pocket. He rejoined Paul and Diane explaining the phone call to them. Paul and Nick quickly left Diane's home and ran outside to his car. Nick unlocked the doors and they climbed in. While Nick started the engine, Paul turned on the radio to the station so they could listen to the letter. Nick looked behind him and slowly backed out of the driveway heading for the Cerk Radio Station. As he drove, they listened to every word. "Behold, we have received another letter from our dear friend Kristi. Let us see what she wishes's to express tonight: Well, Kristi, I trust you are not leaving without, at least, meeting me first. If you can hear me Kristi, please call me." LaCroix requested. Just as LaCroix had turned the switch off on the mike, and played soft piano music, Nick and Paul entered the studio. Paul stood in front of the door while Nick sat close by at LaCroix's side. LaCroix gently handed Nick the letter for him to examine. Nick carefully held the letter read it once again then sighed quietly. "Sounds like she's almost dead herself," Nick said. "Any clue to where she is?" LaCroix asked. "Not yet. But she called her mother to say goodbye." Nick told him. "Oh dear," LaCroix sighed, sadly. When Nick was about to respond to him LaCroix's phone rang and the studio became dead silent. LaCroix slowly reached over picked up the receiver and cleared his throat. "Hello, you have reached the Night Crawler." LaCroix replied. "Hi, Lucien." Kristi said. "You know my name Kristi." LaCroix said. "Yes and what you are." Kristi whispered. "I see, and what am I?" LaCroix inquired. "The only person who actually took the time to talk and listen to me." Kristi told him. "That is what friends are for. Kristi, can you tell me where you are?" LaCroix asked. "Why?" Kristi questioned. "I wish to see you." LaCroix expressed warmly. "I can't." Kristi replied. "All right; can we play a game?" LaCroix requested. "How do you play?" Kristi asked. "I will ask a question and you say hot or cold." LaCroix explained. "Okay." Kristi agreed. "Are you near a highway?" LaCroix asked. "Cold." Kristi answered. "Are you near water?" LaCroix questioned. "Cold; one more." Kristi replied. "Are you near tracks?" LaCroix asked. "Warm. Night, Lucien." Kristi said, softly. "Kristi, Kristi. She's gone." LaCroix said. Before Nick could speak, his cell phone rang. He reached into his pant pocket and pulled it out. "Knight. Thanks. Not enough time to trace." Nick said. "Damn," Paul uttered. "All right. She said warm when you asked about tracks. Her mother said she heard traffic and a bell, like an alarm; ideas?" Nick requested. "Tracks, traffic, bells, maybe buses or trains," Nick replied. "Train tracks." Paul replied. "Most likely. Let's go. Thanks LaCroix. I'll see you at home after Molly's." Nick said. "All right; take care." LaCroix replied. "I will. Keep me posted." Nick told him. LaCroix smiled, "I shall." Paul led the way out of the studio with Nick very close behind. They rode down the elevator then walked outside to his car and Nick unlocked the doors. They climbed in and Nick started the engine and backed away from the curb. Nick quickly drove to the station, and parked along the left side of the building and turned the engine off. They stepped out, and ran up the stairs then walked quickly over to Nick's desk. Paul sat down in front of the computer while Nick sat at his side. Paul began a wide search of trains and the list of items they had. Reese caught a glimpse of them out his office window. He quietly walked out of his office over to Nick's desk. Reese stood by Nick's side very stern, but Paul noticed him and gave a silent wave to wait. "What's the latest?" Reese requested. "My cousin got a third letter and a phone call while we were there. He got her to play a hot/cold game." Nick briefed him. "And?" Reese asked. "She's near tracks." Paul said. "Anything else?" Reese inquired. "Paul's searching for trains and tracks." Nick told him. "Any hits?" Reese asked. "A few," Paul said. "Send Jack and Tony if you need to cover a lot of ground." Reese suggested. "Great, thanks." Nick replied. "How was the third letter?" Reese asked. "Bluntly, sounds like she's close to dead." Nick said, frustrated. "Great. Keep me posted." Reese said. "We will." Paul said. "It's late, kick off until tomorrow." Reese said. "Yes, sir." Nick said. Nick quickly turned his computer off after storing everything in the file. He rubbed his face from the stress and Paul let out a long sigh. "I am heading over to Molly's, you?" Nick inquired. "Home to Carla. Any word yet." Paul queried. "Not yet." Nick sighed. "I will see you at Molly's about ten." Paul said. "My place; I told LaCroix I would be home after Molly's." Nick told him. "Cool. Have fun and relax." Paul strongly suggested. They shook hands and slowly walked out of the building to their own cars. They each drove away in separate directions. Nick slowly drove to Molly's complex. He pulled into the parking lot and found an empty spot near the front door. He turned the engine off and climbed out then strolled up the path to the door. Nick entered the building and stood at Molly's door. He lightly knocked; she answered and he passed by her as she closed the door. Molly greeted Nick with a very warm hug and passionate kiss upon his moist lips. They walked over to the couch where Molly had hot coffee waiting. They sat down and just relaxed for a few moments. Molly reached over picked up the warm mugs and handed one to Nick. They each took a sip to mellow out. "Okay, you told me most of the case. How does Lucien fit in?" Molly inquired. "Kristi has chosen him as her center point of affection." Nick replied. "Whoa. How is he handling it?" Molly queried. "As well as can be expected; it's hard; I'm afraid if we find her dead, he will blame himself." Nick replied. "He will have you to lean on." Molly told him. Nick exhaled, "Always." "All you can do is your best. No more or less." Molly expressed. "I know." Nick said, sighing. "I am here for you." Molly told him. Nick exhaled, "I know." "I will help Lucien, if I can. After all, he is family now, or will be." Molly said. "True. We're both lucky to have you." Nick said, proudly. "I agree." Molly replied. "Do you want to eat in or out?" Nick inquired. "In, I'm tired." Nick said, yawning. "What would you like?" Molly questioned. "Wine, pizza, a movie, and you," Nick blurted out. "In that order?" Molly queried. "Maybe," Nick sighed. "You get the wine and movie, and I will order the pizza and deliver myself with it." Molly told him. "Great. I am starving." Nick expressed. Molly smiled." Me too," Molly ordered their pizza while Nick got the wine and a movie. When the pizza arrived, Molly paid him and brought the pizza into the living room all smiles with brown eyes sparkling like glass. They warmly enjoyed the movie, the pizza, and the very warm moment of loving. ********************** The few hours passed and Nick had arrived at home about ten. LaCroix was sitting in his chair reading a book. He sensed Nick close by, glanced up, and saw him standing a few feet away. LaCroix closed his book and placed it upon the table as he stood up to greet him with his hands crossed. "Nicholas. How was your evening with Molly?" LaCroix asked. "Great. We need to talk a little bit." Nick requested. "Have a seat. What troubles you?" LaCroix queried. "This case, you, and…" Nick started. LaCroix inhaled, "And you're long past." "Some, yes." Nick answered. "Most vampires shed their humanity shortly after coming across. However, you never did. That's why you were redeemed, reborn if you rather." LaCroix replied. "I understand that. What I don't understand is, why?" Nick expressed. "Why you became a vampire or human again?" LaCroix questioned. "Vampire," Nick replied. "Janette was in love with you, but I was fascinated by you and your spirit, so I brought you across." LaCroix told him. "Janette?" Nick inquired. "She passed a few years ago. She became human, and was shot, and later died in a fire." LaCroix told him. "Then it was just us?" Nick queried. "Yes. I have grown to care for you and found it to be my duty to continue, but, mostly because I've grown very attached to you." LaCroix expressed, warmly. "Now, it's my turn to guide you." Nick said. "It would seem so. I'm not sure yet." LaCroix said, hesitating. "I will help you and no one will ever know. I promise." Nick replied. "Thank you. Time to rest. Let us go." LaCroix suggested. "I'm right behind you." Nick said, yawning. LaCroix led the way up the stairs and down the hall to Nick's room. Nick excused himself and stepped into the bathroom. After he flushed the toilet and washed his hands, he changed into his nightclothes. When he strolled back into his bedroom and noticed LaCroix standing in the doorway staring into space. Nick quietly walked up to him, and lightly tapped his arm. LaCroix turned his head, and their eye's met. "What's wrong?" Nick asked. LaCroix exhaled, "I believe, for the first time, I am afraid." "Of what?" Nick inquired. "Perhaps, the future," LaCroix answered. "I'm here," Nick told him. "That does not frighten me," LaCroix replied. "What then?" Nick questioned. "Not sure. Night, Nicholas." LaCroix said. "Night, LaCroix." Nick said, smiling. Nick quietly watched LaCroix slowly enter his room and closed the door behind him. Nick turned back slightly and approached his bed. He pulled down the covers, and climbed in and placed his watch on the nightstand. He stretched over to turn the light off then slowly drifted off to a very restful sleep. When LaCroix looked up after closing his door, he saw Scott standing at the foot of his bed. Scott appeared to have a serious manner about himself, but great concern for LaCroix. "Scott." LaCroix said. "LaCroix, how is he handling it?" Scott asked. LaCroix smiled, "Quite well," "You?" Scott inquired. "Time will tell." LaCroix replied, exhaling. "You look very pale." Scott told him. LaCroix sighed, "I'm fine." "Hold on." Scott requested. Scott strolled over to the small fridge in the corner and grabbed a green bottle. He removed the cork and passed it to LaCroix who drank it quickly. LaCroix closed his eyes and inhaled the little essence that remained. He passed it to Scott who returned it to the fridge. "Feel better?" Scott queried. LaCroix exhaled, "Some," "You're serious about this?" Scott inquired. "I'm not sure." LaCroix replied, pausing. "I too, will help you." Scott told him. "Thank you. It's late, you may rest here." LaCroix replied. "Night," Scott said. LaCroix sighed softly, "Night," Scott moved into the closet for some rest while LaCroix lay upon his bed to rest. He stretched over, and turned his light off and drifted off to sleep as well. ************************* The few remaining night hours passed quickly into daylight. The sun rose high in the sky and displayed an orange sunrise. Suddenly, Nick's alarm sounded so he reached across and turned it off. He lay back on his bed and stared directly up at the ceiling. As he rose to sit, he rubbed the sleep from his eyes and his phone rang which gave him a slight jolt. He leaned over and picked up the receiver then cleared his throat. "Knight," Nick said. "Hey, Buddy," Paul replied. "What's up?" Nick asked. "I finished that search of trains and bus depots. We have three on the list." Paul told him. "Cool. You got Chuck's address?" Nick inquired. Paul exhaled, "Yeah." "We'll go there first, and then lunch." Nick said. "Whoa. We haven't done that in a while." Paul replied. "True," Nick said, sighing. "Be there in five." Paul told him. "Make some coffee. Later," Nick suggested. Nick quickly hung up the phone and climbed out of bed then stumbled into the bathroom. A few moments passed a flush then the shower water. While he washed and cleaned up and dressed, Paul entered the loft. He strolled into the kitchen and made a hot pot of coffee. Nick came down the stairs, and walked over to Paul and gave him a slight scare. Paul handed him a mug for his coffee then sipped his to settle his nerves Nick jolted. "Okay, a quick recap on events before we talk to Chuck." Nick suggested. "Okay. We have three possibilities where Kristi might be. Dale said she was fine up until two years ago." Paul replied. "LaCroix said he would help if we need him." Nick added. "Great. Any word from Kathy, she's been very quiet." Paul inquired. "So true; hold on." Nick requested. Nick carefully stretched over and grabbed his phone then slowly dialed up the lab. Kathy quickly picked up the receiver to answer it. "Forensics, Michaels." Kathy said. "Kathy, Nick. Anything on those letters?" Nick asked. "Hi, it was definitely Kristi who wrote them, and mailed the usual way to your cousin. Everyone touched it." Kathy told him. "Nothing unusual?" Nick inquired. "We did find traces of rubbing alcohol and a blood stain, but not Kristi's. Still waiting. This one is tough." Kathy explained. "I agree. Keep me posted. Later," Nick said. Nick quickly hung up the phone with a slight slam. Paul moved and stood by his side. "I take it she found nothing." Paul replied. "Kristi did write the letters, but the only things found were rubbing alcohol and a blood stain, but not Kristi's." Nick told him. "Her father?" Paul queried. "Maybe. She's definitely got the morphine." Nick said. Paul exhaled, "True," "Let's go see Chuck." Nick suggested. "Lead on." Paul replied in return. Nick led the way with Paul close behind him out of the loft, and down the elevator and out to his car. Nick unlocked the doors, and they climbed in driving to Chuck Weeden's house. Nick spotted the driveway in the distance and carefully rolled in. Nick turned the engine off; they climbed out and Nick locked the doors. They walked up the path and Paul rang the bell then waited patiently. Nick peeked around the edges of the house and it appeared to be very quiet. "I'll go around back." Nick whispered. "Okay." Paul said, nodding his head. Nick carefully opened the screen door and knocked rather loud. Chuck stood in the doorway and saw Nick then froze. He suddenly ran through the house. Nick entered through the door and met up with Paul holding Chuck by his upper arm. "Look at what I caught." Paul said, happily. "Nice catch. Want to talk?" Nick asked. "No." Chuck answered. "Where is she?" Paul asked. "Who?" Chuck queried. "Cute. Time for a ride." Nick suggested. "Let's go." Paul replied, shoving him. Paul held Chuck by his upper arm and followed Nick back outside to his car. Nick unlocked the doors and they climbed in. Nick started the engine slowly, and backed out of the driveway and quickly drove to the station. He pulled up along the curb and parked the car. They stepped out while Nick locked the doors and they walked up the stairs then inside of the building. While Paul took Chuck to the interrogation room, Nick stopped by Reese's office. He asked him to sit in on the questioning. Nick and Reese entered the room as Paul finished pouring Chuck some water. Reese and Nick walked in and they sat around the table. The room was so quiet you could hear a pin fall upon a rug. "Okay Chuck, we know you and Kristi dated at least twice, and I have a feeling when the lab tests come back, your prints will be all over the med room at Dobler." Nick said. "You can't prove that." Chuck replied, getting nervous. "Try me. Where's Kristi?" Nick demanded. "Don't know." Chuck yelled. Suddenly, the phone rang at the edge of the table. Nick stretched across and answered the phone while glaring Chuck down. "Knight," Nick answered. "Hey, Nick, positive; out of the two sets of prints, Chuck is one of them." Kathy told him. "Fax it over please. Thanks." Nick requested. "Sure thing; stop by later," Kathy said. "Okay." Nick replied. Nick slowly hung up the phone with a slight glance to Paul then back to Chuck. "That was the lab. The prints in the med lab are yours. You robbed the Dobler of its morphine, for Kristi." Nick told him. "I'm done." Chuck replied, banging the table. "Yeah, you're done; holding cell for you." Nick said. "For what?" Chuck queried. "Breaking and entering, stealing drugs, and maybe selling them," Paul read off. "No way," Chuck said. "Forensics never lies. Let's see you're twenty-three, so you will be out in about ten or twenty years." Nick said. "Give or take a few years." Paul added on. "If I help, could you put in a word." Chuck inquired. "No promises, but I will try. TALK!" Nick insisted. "Come on Chuck, clock is ticking." Paul demanded. "All right; Kristi called me the day after she escaped. She got her father there and knocked him out. She asked me for help. And after what he did…" Chuck explained. "Morphine," Paul stated. "Yeah. She said she was in a lot of pain. I didn't know what she really had planned." Chuck said. "Did you know he molested her?" Nick asked. "Yeah, mine beat me until he left." Chuck answered. "Sorry". Paul whispered. "Where is she?" Nick asked. "She had me drop it at the bus terminal in a locker, number 43." Chuck told him. "Do you still have the key?" Paul asked. "She told me to leave it in the lock. She would pick it up and move on." Chuck said. "Move on; where?" Nick inquired. "She didn't say, I swear." Chuck replied. "Think, did she say anything else, time is running out." Nick insisted. "She said something weird." Chuck replied. "Go on." Paul said. "Like, I'll rest now near the place of love under his eyes." Chuck quoted to them. "Love and his eyes," Nick replied. "Okay people, enough. Let him rest for a while." Reese suggested. Suddenly, a slight knock on the door and Lisa peeked her head in carrying a file. Reese took the file then asked her to take Chuck to the holding cell. Reese carefully opened the file examined the contents and displayed a surprised look upon his face. "Wait a minute." Reese said. "What?" Nick inquired. "That blood stain you found at Vincent's place?" Reese queried. "Yeah," Nick replied. "Well, it's his and it's loaded with morphine." Reese announced. "Murder/Suicide," Paul replied. "Damn." Nick said. "Let's get moving. It's been too long already." Reese ordered. "First the lab; I want to check on the rest. Then to the radio station." Nick said. "This is the lab report." Reese said, handing it to Paul. "Let's roll." Paul replied. "Wait, I will call for the rest of the lab results. You two head over to the radio station. Where's jack?" Reese inquired. "He's searching the train terminals, but no word yet." Paul told him. "Let's call my cousin." Nick said. "Keep me posted." Reese ordered. They exited the interrogation room and walked down the hall to Nick's desk. Reese went back to his office and closed the door. Nick and Paul sat down at his desk while he called LaCroix. He reached over, picked up the receiver, and dialed his loft. "Hello." Scott replied. "Hey Scott. Tell LaCroix I will meet him at the radio station. We need to keep tracing his phone calls to find Kristi." Nick said. "I will tell him." Scott replied. "Thanks." Nick whispered. Scott quickly hung up the phone and felt LaCroix's presence close by. He turned slightly and gave him a slight glare then shock filled his eyes. Scott slowly raised his hand upward and pointed directly into the mirror. LaCroix's eyes also filled with shock by the vision. For the first time in centuries, LaCroix was looking at his face in the mirror. Suddenly, it faded away; he reached up and lightly touched the mirror turning to face Scott. "LaCroix, your image," Scott replied. "I know." LaCroix said, stunned. "Why?" Scott questioned. "I'm not sure." LaCroix said. Scott exhaled, "You were chosen." "Scott," LaCroix whispered, shaking. "Nicholas called. He said for you to meet him at Cerk Radio." Scott told him. LaCroix exhaled, "All right." As Scott turned away, he noticed LaCroix had walked towards the door and opened it with his hand. He just stared at him then walked away. Scott flew upstairs to fix the rooms from the day's rest. LaCroix made his way outside and observed his surroundings then quickly took to flight to the Cerk radio Station. Nick slowly drove and pulled up along the curb just outside the Forensics building. He turned the engine off and reached for the file lying on the backseat. Paul appeared a little puzzled by the surprise visit. "Why here?" Paul asked. "Kathy said she found an extra set of prints that were not Chuck's. I want to see if she found out whom they belong to." Nick answered. "That's weird. What about the nurse, Lynne and Doctor Willard?" Paul inquired. "Let's go find out." Nick suggested. "Okay, cool." Paul replied. When they climbed out of the car, Nick locked the doors, and his cell phone rang. He reached into his left pocket and pulled it out. "Knight," Nick replied. "Nick, its Jack." Jack said. "Yeah Jack, what did you find out?" Nick asked. "Nothing at CN Tower," Jack told him. "Damn," Nick uttered. "I'm on my way to the Northern Railway to help Tony." Jack replied. "Okay. Call me." Nick said. "Yes, sir," Jack replied. Nick quickly hung up the phone and placed it back into his pocket. He began to pace in a short line mumbling to him self. "Hey, partner." Paul queried. "CN Tower, nothing; he's going to Northern Railway to help Tony." Nick told him. "We will find her. Let's finish here and head over to Cerk. Okay." Paul suggested. "Yeah; come on." Nick replied. They ran up the stairs into Kathy's lab. As they entered the lab, she was sitting at her desk writing in a file. Paul cleared his throat to draw her attention to them. "Hey, guys." Kathy said. "You said you found an extra set of prints. Any clue what it is?" Nick asked "Almost; I had requested prints from everyone involved to match the prints. I got them back except for two." Kathy said. "Who?" Paul queried. "Doctor Willard and Diane Sheldon," Kathy answered. "The rest are negative." Nick replied. "So far; this is one of the biggest puzzles yet." Kathy said. Nick sighed, "I agree." "All I can say is; I will call you when they come in." Kathy replied. "Thanks, Doc. Let's go." Nick suggested. Paul led the way out of the lab with Nick close behind. They walked down the stairs and over to Nick's car. He unlocked the doors and they climbed in. As Nick placed the key into the ignition, his cell phone rang again. He quickly reached into his pocket, pulled it out, and gave Paul a quick look. "Knight," Nick announced. "The phone's all set, we increased the radius. We will be outside in a red van, and hopefully she will call again." John informed Nick. "Great, thanks." Nick replied. Nick quickly placed the phone into his pocket and turned the key to start the engine. "Who was that?" Paul queried. "Sorry. Phone is all set. We're heading there now." Nick replied. "Cool, man." Paul said. Nick quickly pulled away from the curb and drove to the Cerk radio Station. As they approached the alleyway, he backed into the alley out of sight and turned the engine off. They quietly climbed out and Nick locked the doors. Nick led the way in through the backdoor with Paul by his side. They rode up in the elevator and stepped off then walked through the glass door. When they entered, LaCroix stood up to greet them. Paul stood by the door and Nick sat down at LaCroix's side. "What's wrong?" Nick asked. "We'll discuss it later. I received this letter moments ago." LaCroix replied. "You okay?" Nick inquired. "I'm not sure." LaCroix answered. "Okay. Read the letter like before, but plead with Kristi to call you." Nick suggested. "All right," LaCroix said, sighing. "Go ahead," Nick said, softly. "Good evening fellow listeners, this is the Night Crawler, and it appears we have received a letter from my dear friend Kristi. Let us see what she has to share: Oh dear, Kristi, if you are listening, please call me. I'm very concerned about you." LaCroix warmly pleaded. LaCroix painfully reached across and flipped the switch to the microphone off. He closed his eyes and sighed quietly. Nick gave Paul a silent signal to leave the studio for a few. As Paul left the studio, Nick reached over and placed a hand on his upper arm. "LaCroix," Nick replied, concerned. "Where is she?" LaCroix asked, angrily. "I wish I knew." Nick answered. "How do you handle this from day to day?" LaCroix inquired. "You just do. But it helps with friends and family around." Nick told him. LaCroix exhaled, "True," "I'm here," Nick expressed warmly. "I am thankful for that." LaCroix, said, smiling. Nick grinned, "Me too," Suddenly, LaCroix's studio phone rang. He reached over and pushed the button then slowly picked up the receiver placing it gently to his ear while staring at Nick. "You have reached the Night Crawler." LaCroix replied. "Lucien," Kristi whispered. "Kristi, where are you?" LaCroix pleaded. "A safe place filled with love, and a bright white light." Kristi told him. "Kristi, I need to see you. Please tell me." LaCroix requested, scared. "You're eyes are on me, open and you shall see me." Kristi expressed, fading away. "Kristi," LaCroix said, scared. "I love you Lucien. Thank you for your love and you shall be forgiven." Kristi told him. "For what? Kristi," LaCroix shouted. "Goodbye, my sweet knight." Kristi8 replied, in a faint whisper. "Kristi, Kristi. She's gone." LaCroix said, terrified. "Damn," Nick sighed, angrily. Suddenly, Nick's cell phone rang. He quickly pulled it out of his pocket to answer while the two of them sit on the edge of their seats. "Knight," Nick replied. "Sorry, Nick, too short," John answered. "Thanks, John." Nick said. Nick placed his phone back and LaCroix sensed the response to the call. LaCroix felt angry, and slammed his hands on his desk and moved away. Nick followed him and stood by his side. "LaCroix, did you hear anything in the background? Anything?" Nick asked. "A train running," LaCroix answered. "Her mother said she loves trains." Nick said. He removed his cell phone once again and Paul had just entered the studio. He felt the tension in the atmosphere. "Jack, Nick, anything?" Nick asked. "Not yet. Did she call?" Jack inquired. "Yeah; he said he heard a train running." Nick told him. "Hold on a second," Jack requested. "She called?" Paul inquired. "Yeah," Nick replied. "And?" Paul queried. "Not long enough." Nick said. Paul exhaled, "Damn," "Nick." Jack said. "Go ahead, Jack." Nick replied. "There are only two places we haven't looked at yet." Jack told him. "Where?" Nick asked. "The bus and train terminals share the same building. There are two warehouses, one on the bus side and one on the train side." Jack explained. "Okay, you and Tony take the bus side and we'll take the other. Keep your phone on." Nick ordered. "Sure thing," Jack replied. "We'll take the warehouse near the train terminal. LaCroix, do you want to join us?" Nick asked. "If I open my eyes, I will see her. My eyes are on her. Oh my," LaCroix said gasping for air. "What?" Nick asked, terrified. "She is at the old station. My picture is still hanging there. My eyes are on her, and she's under it." LaCroix said. "Let's go. Paul, call Jack." Nick said, eagerly. "Yes. Let's go." Paul replied, happily. They quickly left the studio and rode down the elevator running out the back door to Nick's car. Nick unlocked the doors and they climbed in. He started the engine and backed up then drove quickly to the old studio. Paul set up the light and siren then called Jack to have him and Tony meet them at the warehouse. LaCroix pointed out the building to Nick and showed him where to park. Nick pulled up along the curb and turned the engine off. As they climbed out of the car LaCroix flew off unnoticed and searched the building on his own. "Nick, he's gone." Paul said. Nick exhaled, "Damn, let's go." They quietly entered the warehouse with their guns drawn and searched every inch. LaCroix saw a soft light glowing from under a closed door. He slowly approach and gently opened the door. As the door slowly opened, the room completely lit by candles. A man's body was lying at the far corner of the room dead with flies buzzing around it. Directly in his path was Kristi lying on the floor very still, surrounded by candles and just off to the left of her head, his picture gazing upon her. He slowly walked into the room and knelt down by her side. He gently lifted her head and her eyes slowly opened then she saw him. Kristi gave him a soft peaceful smile. LaCroix gazed into her eyes and sensed her life force fading. Nick and Paul just arrived and observed them from the doorway. Paul quietly called for back up. "Kristi," LaCroix said. "Lucien, I knew you would come." Kristi replied, softly. "Let me help you." LaCroix offered warmly. "It is too late. All I see is a bright light and it is very peaceful." Kristi told him. "Kristi," LaCroix replied, teary-eyed. "Thank you Lucien. May God bless and forgive you. I love you Lucien." Kristi replied, fading away. "Kristi," LaCroix said, slightly crying. Kristi slowly closed her eyes and smiled warmly as she died in his arms. For the first time, in centuries, LaCroix actually had a small tear slowly rolling down his cheek. He truly felt her pain and then the release from the suffering she had endured. LaCroix lovingly cradled her in his arms to protect her and kept her safe as she traveled to the world beyond. Paul stayed at the doorway, but Nick slowly walked in and knelt down by LaCroix's side. He placed a hand upon his shoulder. "LaCroix, come on, she's gone." Nick said. LaCroix, crying slightly, "I cannot," "Please, let her go. Come with me." Nick replied, scared. "Nicholas," LaCroix said, sadly. "I know. Please, come with me." Nick said, warmly. LaCroix gently laid Kristi's head down and lifted her hand. He warmly placed a gentle kiss upon her hand and placed it upon her chest. Nick carefully helped LaCroix to his feet and slowly escorted him across the floor through the doorway. "I will finish up here, see you at the loft." Paul told him. "Thanks. I owe you." Nick said. "Beers, all three of us," Paul suggested. "Deal, later," Nick replied. As Nick escorted LaCroix out of the room as the Forensic crew and Captain Reese arrived on the scene. Kathy and her people divided up to handle the two bodies and Reese stood at Paul's side. "Fill me in." Reese ordered. "At the radio station she called in. Not enough time to trace it, but she gave some clues and Lucien knew where she was. I called Jack and Tony to meet us here. Lucien ran in first and found Kristi like this. That's the father I assume." Paul briefed him. "Did she say anything?" Reese asked. "She spoke to Lucien. I told Nick to take him home. I'll get the rest later." Paul replied. "Is he all right?" Reese inquired. "Not sure." Paul said, sighing. Suddenly, Kathy and Ryan approached Paul and Reese in the doorway. They both sighed with grief. "Well?" Reese inquired. "Well, Kristi died from an overdose of morphine of which she was highly allergic to." Kathy said. "The father, Vincent, multiple stab wounds, the rest will have to wait until we run some tests." Ryan briefed them. "Same here for Kristi." Kathy added. "Great," Paul replied. "Okay people, finish up, and let's put this to rest. I will notify Diane in the morning. That way we can get the tests and an autopsy done." Reese said. "Thanks." Kathy replied. "I'm heading over to Nick's." Paul told him. "I'll drop you off. Morning ten o'clock." Reese instructed him. "Sure, Cap." Paul agreed. "Okay, finish up. Jack and Tony stand guard. I'll send someone to relieve you in the morning." Reese ordered. "Yes, sir." Jack replied. "Let's go, Paul." Reese said. Reese escorted Paul out of the room and down the long hall and outside to his car. They both climbed in and Paul appeared distant. Reese started the engine but noticed Paul. "What's up?" Reese asked. "I feel like I just lost a sister." Paul replied. "When this case is done, you two are on a long vacation. Got it." Reese insisted. "Yes, Cap. I think we need one." Paul said. "Let's go." Reese replied. Reese placed the car in drive and slowly drove Paul to Nick's loft. In the living room, Nick was by the table while LaCroix hung at the staircase. Nick could see the pain that surrounded him. "LaCroix, talk to me." Nick requested. "About what?" LaCroix inquired. LaCroix exhaled, "Kristi," "Kristi, a young human girl who said she loved me. She died because of her father's disgusting habit. That I actually cried when she died in my arms. The first tear I cried in centuries." LaCroix blurted out, angrily. "Yes. I did the same after Natalie." Nick told him. "It was different for you." LaCroix said. "How; because you were the evil one," Nick replied. "Yes. I do not deserve this." LaCroix hissed in anger. Nick inhaled, "Why?" "I have seen and caused too much pain, and destruction. I have watched death and I have killed." LaCroix answered. "So did I," Nick said. "Nicholas," LaCroix said with a sigh. "You have taken care of me for centuries. I'm human with a new life. Why do you continue to take care of me?" Nick asked. "It's my duty." LaCroix replied. "Why?" Nick asked, firmer. "Because, I love you, you are my son, and my friend." LaCroix answered, shouting. "You are my father, my cousin, and my best friend. I love you as well. Is that a good reason to come back?" Nick queried. LaCroix exhaled, "It frightens me." "So was I," Nick replied. "A few nights ago, I saw my image in the mirror." LaCroix shared with him. "What?" Nick inquired, stunned. "Yes, and Scott was there." LaCroix said. "That's a start," Nick replied, smiling. LaCroix exhaled, "I need some time to think." "Where are you going?" Nick asked, scared. "I don't know. Please understand. I will call you." LaCroix requested, pleading. "But…" Nick started, scared. "Please, Nicholas." LaCroix pleaded, softly. "All right; but call me, or I will search for you next." Nick insisted. "I will. I promise." LaCroix replied. "LaCroix, I…" Nick said, warmly. LaCroix smiled, "I know. Night, Nicholas." "Night, be safe." Nick said, upset. Nick approached LaCroix and they glanced at each other then embraced tightly. LaCroix painfully stepped away and walked up the stairs. He roamed down to his room and closed the door. He stood by the window and looked around then took to flight. Downstairs, Nick had his face buried into his arm with a few tears fell from his eyes. Suddenly, a slight knock on the door and Paul strolled in. The door closed automatically behind him and he saw Nick by the stairs. Paul quietly approached him, and saw the tears and quietly cleared his throat. "Hey, buddy." Paul said. Nick, slightly crying, "Hey," "You okay?" Paul inquired. "No, but I will be, eventually," Nick said. "Guess what? I have arrived." Paul announced. "Thanks. Funny, but thanks," Nick said, upset. "Two beers and we will talk." Paul suggested. "Fridge," Nick told him. "I know. You go and sit down and we'll shoot the breeze." Paul replied. "Okay. I'm going to call Molly first." Nick said. "Tell her I said Hi." Paul requested. Nick exhaled, "I will." Paul left Nick by the stairs. Nick pulled out his cell phone and slowly dialed up Molly. He casually sat upon the steps and rubbed his face. "Hello." Molly replied. "Hey. Paul says hello." Nick said. "What's wrong?" Molly asked. "We found Kristi." Nick told her. "I'm sorry," Molly said, warmly. Nick, slightly crying, "LaCroix left," "Why?" Molly asked. "The girl had a huge connection to him and when she died in his arms, it was…" Nick replied, upset. "Poor, Lucien. Do you want me to come over?" Molly inquired. "Please," Nick said. "On my way, love you." Molly told him. "Love you, too. Thank you." Nick replied. Nick hung up his phone, and stood up and walked over to the couch where Paul was waiting for him. Nick slowly sat next to him, took a big gulp of beer, and then exhaled. "Okay, talk." Paul said. "LaCroix left for a while and I was not ready for that." Nick told him. "Did he say what Kristi said before she died?" Paul asked. "No. He was in too much pain and could not talk about it." Nick said. "Poor, guy," Paul said, sighing. "How about the warehouse?" Nick inquired. "Vincent died from multiple stab wounds and possible overdose. Kristi died from an overdose of morphine. There was not much to find. Vincent died on day one." Paul briefed him. "She also died from a broken heart. Damn. Something is missing." Nick suggested. "I know what you mean. This does not feel like its over." Paul agreed. Nick exhaled, "It's not. Kathy said she got all the prints back but two." "Who?" Paul asked. "Doctor Willard and Diane Sheldon," Nick replied. "Whoa, two biggies," Paul added. "What would each gain from this?" Nick questioned. "Well, for Diane, revenge. Doctor Willard, not sure," Paul suggested. "Is she married?" Nick asked. Paul exhaled, "Yeah." "What was her maiden name?" Nick queried. "Don't know. Let me play on the computer." Paul replied. "Sure. Oh, Molly's on her way." Nick told him. "Goody. I'll play with the computer and you can play with Molly." Paul suggested. "Okay." Nick agreed, smiling. Paul grinned, "You want to trade later." "No." Nick said. "You don't play fair." Paul told him. "You'll live." Nick said, calming down. "Darn," Paul said, snapping his fingers. Paul slapped Nick on his knee as he stood up and walked over to the computer. He sat down and tapped the keys. There was a knock upon the door then it opened, and Molly walked in. She saw Nick by the couch and moved towards him. Molly saw the pain in his blue eyes and wrapped her arms around his neck then Nick collapsed into her loving arms. Molly helped him to sit back down on the couch. She sat very close to him. She stroked his golden hair away from his eyes and rubbed his shoulders to comfort him. "I'm here. It's okay." Molly replied. "I know. Are you thirsty or hungry?" Nick inquired. "I will make some dinner in a few. Just relax for a while." Molly requested. "Okay." Nick said, exhaling. "Paul, are you hungry?" Molly asked. "Yes." Paul answered. "Okay. Excuse me, and I will get dinner ready." Molly said. "I owe you one." Nick said, smiling. "Big one," Molly said, seductively. Nick smiled, "Later," "Perfect," Molly replied, warmly. "Nick, take a look at this." Paul replied. "Always, coming." Nick said. They stood up, and embraced each other with a warm hug then a slight kiss. Molly strolled into the kitchen to prepare dinner and Nick walked over to Paul's direction. He sat down in a chair behind Paul and saw the screen. "What is that?" Nick asked. "That's her birth certificate from the registry." Paul told him. "Whoa, but why?" Nick questioned. "Still looking," Paul replied. Molly quietly came into the living room looked towards Nick and announced that dinner was ready. Paul set the computer to do an automatic search while they ate. ******************** Back at the Raven, LaCroix was standing by his window gazing up at the stars. Unaware of Scott who had entered the room, and stood at the foot of the bed. He quietly observed his motionless body. Scott cleared his throat to draw his attention to his presence. "LaCroix," Scott said. "Scott," LaCroix replied. "What troubles you?" Scott asked. "I actually cried when Kristi died in my arms." LaCroix told him. Scott exhaled, "I see." "I, the evil one, cried at the loss of a human." LaCroix replied, scared. "There is nothing wrong in that." Scott told him. "For me, there is." LaCroix replied. "What was the reason you stayed with Nicholas, because you made him or do you truly care for him?" Scott asked. "What?" LaCroix inquired, stunned. "Think about it. Was it because you made him or you were drawn to his spirit that was so strong that you envy him and wished to have some of it?" Scott questioned. "No." LaCroix whispered. "No what? Nicholas is no longer a vampire. Why do you stay?" Scott asked. "He asked me to stay." LaCroix replied, hiding. "WHY!" Scott shouted. "I care for him." LaCroix shouted in return. "Love," Scott answered. LaCroix smiled, "Perhaps," "There is nothing wrong with that. You found your heart and you stayed because you chose to." Scott told him. "True," LaCroix replied. "Well then?" Scott questioned. "You're right." LaCroix said, smiling. "Let us take this journey together. Nicholas will help and we will be content." LaCroix requested. "I see." Scott said. "Go see him, his heart is worried about you plus you need to end this puzzle with him." "Perhaps. I wrote this for Kristi. I will read it tonight." LaCroix replied. "I will watch the club. Say hello to Nicholas for me." Scott said. LaCroix smiled warmly, "I will. Thank you." LaCroix gave Scott a slight laugh, walked by him, and took to flight to Nick's loft. He arrived just outside the elevator and LaCroix rode up to his loft. He opened the door and saw everyone sitting in the living room drinking hot coffee. Nick slowly rose from the couch to greet him. They both grinned then embraced each other with a slight hug. Nick escorted LaCroix to the chair, and handed him a cup of hot coffee and asked him to join in. "Thank you." LaCroix replied. "Hi, Lucien, sorry about Kristi," Molly said. "Yes. It was a tragic loss. I wrote a poem for her for tonight's show." LaCroix told them. "She would love that." Nick said. "Hey, Lucien, welcome back. Excuse me for a moment." Paul said. Paul left everyone behind and walked over to the computer to see what the search had discovered. The results shocked him. "NICK!" Paul shouted. "Yeah," Nick said. "You won't believe this." Paul replied. "Let's see." Nick requested. Nick stood at Paul's side and they stared into the screen, "No way," "But, why would she want him dead?" Paul asked. "What's this?" Nick asked. Nick quickly clicked the mouse and opened a file from fifteen years ago and the answer to Paul's question revealed. "Holy…" Paul started. "Lady present," Nick said. "He's done this before." Paul replied. "Revenge plus she used Kristi to do it." Nick said stunned. Paul inhaled, "But how to prove it." "I'm willing to bet her prints are the unknown set." Nick replied. "How do we get them?" Paul questioned. "Don't know." Nick said, exhaling. "Nicholas," LaCroix jumped in. "Yeah," Nick answered. "Does anyone know about Kristi yet?" LaCroix asked. Nick inhaled, "No, why?" "Announce she is in the hospital, alive, and lore her in. Kristi was the only one to identify her." LaCroix suggested. Nick smiled, "True. Brilliant." "I love his brain." Paul said proudly. "You call the Cap to set it up." Nick said, pulling LaCroix aside. "Done," Paul said, walking away. "One condition," LaCroix suggested. "That is?" Nick queried. "I wish to be there, to confront her." LaCroix requested. "Done, but it will be daylight." Nick told him. "Fine; I will read the poem tomorrow night." LaCroix replied, sadly. "Good, I want to be there." Nick said, warmly. LaCroix smiled, "All right," "It's all set and the hospital will set up the room to give the appearance she's alive." Paul briefed them. "Great. Time to rest and we have a busy day tomorrow." Nick replied. "True. Night, Nicholas." LaCroix said quietly. "Night, LaCroix." Nick said. "I will take the guest room. Later," Paul suggested. "Just you and me," Molly said. "I owe you, remember," Nick said, grinning. Molly smiled widely, "Oh yeah, and a big one," "Lead the way M'Lady." Nick replied. Molly gently took Nick by the hand and slowly led him up the stairs then down the hall. She walked him into his bedroom where they slowly undressed each other and made love through the night with the remaining night hours. ********************** The sun slowly rose in the horizon into the crystal blue sky and the sweet scents of the flowers accented the air. Nick woke up with Molly at his side sleeping peacefully. He carefully crawled out of the bed and walked into the bathroom. A few moments passed, a flush then he showered. He stepped in to clean up and turned around to turn the water off. He stepped out and dried off. He got dressed for the day and quietly walked out of his room and into LaCroix's. He gently sat upon the edge of the bed and lightly tapped his arm. LaCroix suddenly opened his eyes, but for a split second, they were red then returned back to his normal blue. He woke up to Nick's face and sat up slightly to greet him. "Nicholas, what's wrong?" LaCroix asked. "It's time to go." Nick whispered. LaCroix inhaled, "But, its still daylight." "Well, I will bring the car around back, and it's your turn to ride in the trunk." Nick said, grinning. "The trunk," LaCroix said, sighing. "Trust me, its safe." Nick replied, laughing. "What of Molly?" LaCroix asked. "She's still sleeping, don't worry. Here, you will need this and these." Nick replied. "A blanket and sunglasses," LaCroix replied, confused. "Trust me." Nick whispered. LaCroix smiled, "I do." "Good, come on. I will see you at the back door." Nick told him. Nick left the room so LaCroix could prepare himself for the daylight. He placed the glasses on and strolled down the hallway then the stairs. He quickly walked around the staircase to the backdoor and Nick standing there with the trunk open. LaCroix covered himself with the blanket, running and jumped into the trunk. Nick closed it and climbed in behind the wheel. He quickly started the engine and drove to the hospital where Paul was waiting for them. Nick arrived at the parking garage under the hospital. He pulled into the closest spot near the elevator. He turned the engine off and climbed out then locked the doors. Nick unlocked the trunk for LaCroix. He slowly climbed out and very carefully made their way to the elevator and rode up to the first floor. As the door, opened Paul was standing there waiting. "We're set up in room 12. We closed the blinds for Lucien, so he won't be seen and have a crew in room 10, right next door. Reese called her and told her. So we will see. Come on." Paul explained. "Stay close." Nick replied. LaCroix stayed very close to Nick's side and followed Paul to room 10. When they entered the room, they saw Jack and Tony all wired up with headphones and Reese over by the window peeking through the blinds. "Wait here, its safe. Paul, let's check in." Nick replied. "Hey, guys." Reese said. "What's the scoop?" Paul asked. "Well, we have an undercover officer in the bed. I called her and told her what you suggested. So, now we wait." Reese briefed them. "That's the tough part." Nick replied. "What did you find in the search?" Reese asked. "Vincent Sheldon did this about fifteen years ago to her daughter, but she died. Lack of evidence got him off." Paul told him. "Well, he is dead now." Reese said. "But, revenge didn't help." Nick replied. Paul sighed, "True," "Cap," Jack whispered. "Yeah," Reese replied. "Someone's in the room." Jack told him. "Let's hear it." Reese said. Jack removed the headphones so they could hear what is going on. Suddenly, a woman's voice came across the speaker. "Oh Kristi, I am so sorry. I did not want this for you. All I wanted was for him to pay for what he did to you and Melanie. I am so sorry. But, it is time for you to rest." Emily explained. Nick entered through the side door while Paul entered through front door. They had their guns drawn and the woman sat up in the bed and Doctor Willard gasped. "Hold it, Doc." Nick replied. "You," Emily whispered. "And me." Paul said. "You don't understand." Emily said. "We do." Nick said. "Where's Kristi?" Emily asked. "She died from an overdose of morphine." Paul explained. "At least she won't suffer anymore." Emily replied. "Was it worth it?" LaCroix asked. Emily, stunned, "What?" "Using Kristi for your revenge?" LaCroix inquired. "It was necessary." Emily expressed angrily. "Not even close. You give evil a whole new look." LaCroix said firmly. "You have no right here." Emily shouted. "She was a friend; it is you who had no right." LaCroix expressed angrily. "Whoa, LaCroix, don't worry, she is going away." Nick told him. "I don't think so." Emily said, staggering. "Why?" Paul asked. Suddenly, Doctor Willard fell to the floor and didn't move. Paul ran quickly to her side and felt her neck, stunned by the fact she had no pulse. Nick approached and Paul shook his head and Nick looked to LaCroix. Reese and the rest of the crew entered the room to take over. "Nick, take your cousin out of here." Reese ordered. "We'll catch up later." Paul said. "Thanks. Let's go." Nick said. Nick and LaCroix slowly made there way to the elevator and rode down to the garage. Nick walked over and unlocked the trunk. LaCroix quickly walked for the trunk and jumped in. "Where to?" Nick asked. "Radio Station; you?" LaCroix queried. "Molly's at my place. We'll come by for the ending." Nick told him. "All right," LaCroix whispered. Nick closed the trunk and unlocked his door. He climbed in and started the engine. He backed out and drove LaCroix to the Cerk Radio Station. He helped him in through the back door and drove to his loft to Molly where she was waiting for him. Molly was sitting on the couch reading a book when he entered through the door. "Hey, you okay?" Molly asked. "I'm not sure." Nick replied, confused. "Did you catch her?" Molly inquired. "Yeah, all of this for revenge. She killed two people for the death of her daughter fifteen years ago." Nick explained. "I understood how she felt, but her way was wrong." Molly said. "Understood?" Nick queried. "Mother's and their children; we will do anything to protect them; alive or dead." Molly answered. "I see that." Nick said. Molly exhaled, "I know," "I told LaCroix that we would be at the studio for the ending." Nick told her. "Let's go." Molly replied, warmly. Molly walked up to Nick, and gave him a slight hug and kiss escorting her out of the loft; down the elevator. He walked her to the car and opened the door. He climbed in and started the engine. Nick backed out and slowly drove to the station to meet up with LaCroix. LaCroix was preparing for his show when Nick and Molly came in. They sat down around the table with him and Molly gave LaCroix a slight smile for comfort. He grinned and quietly cleared his throat. "Hello. This is the Night Crawler and thank you for coming. We sadly lost a listener the other night. Miss Kristi Sheldon. I have taken the time to write this for her: So my fellow listeners, we will now listen to your opinions of this tragic loss." LaCroix said. "Beautifully done," Molly told him. LaCroix smiled, "Thank you." "I will take Molly home and see you at the loft." Nick replied. "All right, thank you for being here." LaCroix replied. "Anytime," Molly said. Molly leaned over and placed a gentle kiss upon his cheek, which he grinned and laughed, "Come on," Nick escorted Molly out of the studio to his car and he drove her home. Nick pulled into the parking lot and parked near the front door. He turned the engine off and climbed out then walked over to Molly's side and opened her door. She climbed out and he closed the door. They walked up the path and into the building holding hands. She unlocked her door then hesitated. Nick placed a hand upon her upper arm. "What is it?" Nick asked. "Nick, I have given your question a lot of thought." Molly replied. "And?" Nick queried. "I love you so much, and I want us to be together forever, married. I'm not ready so please don't be angry." Molly pleaded. "Sweetheart, I love you with every ounce of life in me, I understand and it's okay." Nick told her, smiling. "Really?" Molly inquired. Nick smiled, "Yes, really." "Thank you." Molly said, exhaling. "Can you take a few days or maybe a week off?" Nick inquired. "Why?" Molly asked. "Vacation time," Nick said. "Oh yes; where?" Molly inquired, happily. "This time, you choose and we will go." Nick requested. Molly exhaled, "Paul and Carla?" "If you want them to," Nick said. "I do." Molly whispered. "I like that." Nick replied, lovingly. "Me too, tomorrow?" Molly queried. "Oh yeah; love you." Nick replied, warmly. Molly exhaled, "Love you, too." Nick leaned towards her and very warmly kissed her. She stepped inside and closed the door while Nick left the building heading for his car driving home. ********************** Just as LaCroix was preparing to close up the studio, his phone rang. He stretched over and picked up the receiver. "Night Crawler," LaCroix answered. "Hi. This is Diane Sheldon, Kristi's mother." Diane said. "I'm sorry for your loss." LaCroix told her, sadly. "Thank you. But I am calling to say Thank you for the lovely poem and giving her some peace before she died." Diane shared with him. "You're welcome." LaCroix replied, smiling. "Goodnight." Diane said. "Night; this is the Night Crawler signing off in silence for Kristi. See you here tomorrow night." LaCroix announced. LaCroix slowly turned everything off. He walked over to the door and locked it on his way out. He rode down the elevator to the back alley behind the studio. LaCroix observed his surroundings and quickly took to flight. He flew to Nick's loft and entered through his bedroom window. He strolled down the hall then the stairs and into the living room where Nick was sitting on the couch. LaCroix quietly sat down in the chair and gazed into his direction. "Nicholas," LaCroix uttered. "Hey, you okay?" Nick inquired. "I'm fine." LaCroix sighed, exhaling. "Wine, beer, or coffee?" Nick queried. "Wine, please." LaCroix answered. Nick poured two glasses of wine, and handed a glass to LaCroix, and they drank a silent toast to Kristi. "Thank you." LaCroix said. "That was a very nice tribute to Kristi." Nick said, smiling. "Thank you. Her mother called in." LaCroix told him. "She liked it as well." Nick replied. "Yes. Has Molly responded to your question yet?" LaCroix inquired. "Yeah; she's not ready to make that kind of move. Besides, that will give us more time to explore you." Nick replied. "Meaning?" LaCroix inquired. "What do you want? Do you wish to have me guide you or do you wish to ignore it?" Nick asked. "Scott and I will need your guidance." LaCroix answered. "Scott, too?" Nick inquired. "Possibly; we will try with no guarantees." LaCroix told him. Nick smiled, "No problem." "Was there anything else?" "I can't seem to remember much right now." Nick told him. "Here's to the future." LaCroix replied, smiling. "The future," Nick said. Suddenly, Nick's phone rang just as they made a toast for the new journey ahead. He moved over to the table and picked up the receiver. "Knight," Nick announced. "Hey, Nick. I faxed the file over for you in the morning. Well, you know most of it. Vincent died from an overdose of morphine then she stabbed him. Kristi died peacefully from an overdose of morphine; which makes this case closed." Reese informed him. "What about Doctor Willard?" Nick asked. "Oh yeah; she was a little tricky. Apparently, she injected a very high dose of morphine before entering the room. That's why she collapsed and died." Reese answered. Nick sighed, "Thanks." "How's your cousin holding up after his ordeal?" Reese asked. "He's okay. I will call you in the morning, night." Nick replied. "Night, Nick." Reese said, hanging up. A slight knock upon the door and in walked Paul carrying a bag on his shoulder. He had a grin on his face and Nick appeared puzzled. "What's that?" Nick asked. "They're painting my place and Carla's still away. Can I crash here? Please Pal." Paul begged. "Guest room, okay," Nick inquired. "Yeah, thanks. Did Molly answer your question?" Paul asked. "She's not ready for that yet." Nick told him. "You okay with that?" Paul inquired. "Yeah, I guess." Nick said. Paul exhaled, "Beer time." "She will let me know when she's ready, if not; she'll be here after the wedding." Nick said. "So true," Paul replied. "Beer's ice-cold in the fridge." Nick told him. Paul exhaled, "I'm on it." "LaCroix, care to join in?" Nick asked. "Thank you." LaCroix answered. "Paul, grab one more." Nick yelled out. "Okay." Paul replied. Paul grabbed a six-pack of beer and closed the door. He carried it into the living room and placed it on the table. Paul ripped the box open and passed the beer bottles around. They sat down and drank beer most of the night. This case is over, but it only just began for LaCroix. THE END?
